Chance of getting Edens Court - Accomodiation

I want to apply to Derwent as I've seen postive reviews and apparently it has a high social aspect.

However, I rarely eat much for breakfast (I'm never hungry in the morning) so catered would be a waste of money. Looking at York's website from my understanding if I apply for any of the non-catered I might end up in edens court, which to me feels a bit too far away from everything else.

Is it worth taking the risk, how much blocks are there to go around the self-catered people? Or is there any self catered that isn't in edens court.

Thanks in advance!

I’m wondering about this too. I wasn’t sure whether Eden’s Court is a specific choice on the application or whether you can just randomly get put there if you select Derwent?! I’m assuming, re catered, that you could maybe get takeaway breakfast, ie bacon sandwich (or something) and eat it later?? 🤷*♀️

Looking at past threads it seem people who have got Eden's Court it came as a suprise unfortunately. I mean there was also that other person saying to avoid it completely so I'm not too sure...

Only thing with the takeaway breakfast, is that if I'm doing it everyday, might get a bit long getting up just to grab the same sandwich everyday... I also don't love limiting my meal time for EVERY weekday. Not sure how much plans I will have that I will need to cater around catered

Hi, so I only know of one person put in Eden's Court and from what I've gathered it's only the people who applied for Derwent super late, so I wouldn't be too worried. Honestly, it's not as far away as it seems, it's only 5 minutes from the main Derwent blocks/common rooms/food hall and the same to the sports centre and bus stop into town and campus east. Because they're houses rather than flats it also gives you a better opportunity to bond with the people you live with and your neighbours. If you have any other questions please let me know

Hi!

I'd also recommend looking at Halifax College if you want to be self catered on Campus West. Halifax is the largest college on campus, so it is really social. There's a mix of houses and flat style accommodation and two common rooms to socialise in.

Eden's court is close to Halifax but it's set apart, so if you want to be living near lots of other students, then Halifax might be a good option.

Hope this helps!

I've always thought halifax looked a bit too far away from everything else judging from the campus map. Never actually walked down there on any of the open days. Blocks H, E, G and F was said to be self-catered when I visited on the open days, but didn't seem to be on the accomodation application list. Did I just mishear?

Thanks in advanced

Hi there,

Halifax College is about a 10-minute walk from both the Spring Lane Building and the Sports Centre on Campus West, and around a 25 minute walk from Ron Cooke Hub on Campus East. The Heslington Hall bus stop for the 66 and 67 buses into town is only 5 minutes walk away as well. So I wouldn't say it's far away from things! All the rooms in Halifax College are self-catered, so if you're certain you want to be self-catered, Halifax could be a good college for you!

Blocks H, E, G and F in Derwent are only open to returning undergraduate students I'm afraid, but Eden's Court in Derwent is also Band 3 self-catered.

I hope this helps - Hannah
