Back-up choice a must for university applicants, says admissions chief

School-leavers must include a safety net choice amid intense competition for university places, the head of admissions at Cambridge University will say today.

Many students were using their five Ucas choices to pick a limited range of universities, courses or grade expectations, he told The Times ahead of the launch of a report.

5 rejections from universities you would like to go to are worth more (for experience and knowing you tried) than 5 offers from universities that you would not like to go to.

Better to try and fail to go where you want than to waste everyone’s time and effort getting offers you have no intention of accepting.

That being said - there’s a hell of a lot of unwarranted snobbery around university choice with teachers and applicants dismissing universities without actually doing any proper research into the location, facilities and course content.

Totally agree, you have to WANT to go there. :yep:

And totally agree about the (usually baseless) snobbery that goes on. :frown:

The other thing for me though - having a decent spread of entry grades on initial applications would also be sensible (provided you would be happy going to any of those unis). What do you think about this? :holmes:
