Gap year plans

Hi, so I haven't gotten in to uni this year and have decided to take a gap year. None of my friends are taking a gap year, so I was wondering if anyone knew of any sites or groups that I can join to find people to travel with or groups to volunteer with. Thanks x

Hi there

Taking a gap year can be really beneficial and fun! I would definitely recommend checking out the UCAS website for some ideas on what to do during your gap year. In terms of travelling there are many organisations where you can solo travel with groups and meet other people in a similar position to you. The main ones I recommend are Tru travels and Myadventureproject as I've had multiple friends use them and they've had really positive experiences. Hope this helps!

There are so many sites but I guess it depends where you want to go and what you want to do. These are some of the best to arrange experiences: Gap Year World / Jobs Abroad.

Do you have money saved up? If not, I would personally recommend working for a few months just to have a bit of money to get you going.

However, for a cheap volunteering option, I'd recommend Workaway. I've used it myself and it's a cool way to travel whilst also giving something back. There's a mix of different projects, in different countries, and often they will include accommodation/food in exchange for a couple hours of work.

I did a workaway in Greece helping at a cat sanctuary, and I also did one in Vietnam helping at a hostel.

I would also highly recommend Facebook groups. Search depending on where you want to go/what you want to do, and there's a lot of really useful communities and other people searching for the same thing.

Be careful of these Gap year programmes that expect you to cough up thousands of pounds, just to go somewhere and do some volunteering. Be sure you know exactly what you are paying for, what is included and if something feels off - just leave it. Plenty of scams out there

Edited to add: I took two gap years before starting uni and it was such a good decision. Absolutely no regrets :smile:
