These novels are speculative fiction. The biggest themes in Orwells 1984 are: truth, loss of individuality, 'reality', language control, thought police, manipulation, totalitarianism (big brother), invasion/ loss of privacy, and surveillance.

The Handmaid's Tale: Gender, sexual, and power politics, the self and individuality, manipulation of language (control of info), identity, motherhood, resistance, rebellion and freedom.
