Civil service apprenticeship pre-employment checks?

I've been given a provisional offer and I am still waiting for them to tell me which documentation they need. If you are currently doing/completed a civil service apprenticeship, what kind of references do they ask for?
Also, how long do the pre-employment checks usually take?

Hi! A member from Team ACE has provided the following reply : It depends on which programme you applied for and/or department. For the GES apprenticeship I was asked for two references. A) Educational (E.g Headteacher) & B) a non-family member who’s known me for an extended period of time.
