Integrated masters in law

Hi! I am a year 12 student almost finished with finalising university options. I was having a look around when I saw that the University of Essex offered an integrated masters in law. Anyone doing / done this degree would you be able to talk me through the benefits of doing this degree as opposed to a normal LLB. Also, how is the university like as a whole? Lastly, I believe this is offered at the Colchester campus so would you be able to also advise me on Colchester and whether it offers a good range of job opportunities for law etc. Thank you.

Hi @hk123*6

It's great to hear you are considering studying with us next year!

Our Integrated Master in Law is a superb way to develop the same key skills for Law as on the LLB, as well as investigating more advanced topics by achieving a masters-level qualification. You will cover all key areas of law, as well as a wide range of optional topics including: copyright and trademark law, international environmental law, law and literature, human rights and the use of evidence. In your 4th year you will get to explore advanced masters level topics such as; maritime law, international criminal law, protection of refugees, business & human rights and artificial intelligence & human rights. Throughout your degree you can also gain hands on, invaluable, work experience, advising real clients through opportunities such as the Essex Law and Human Rights Clinic.

In terms of what the university is like as a whole, by studying Law at The University of Essex you will be part of a department that is rated 3rd in the UK for research power in law (THE research power measure, REF2021) and 47th for Law in THE World University Rankings by Subject 2023. Our lecturers from Essex Law School also work with the UN, the UK government, and with EU and foreign governments.

In terms of campus: Our gym is home to over 160 fitness stations, on-site parking, machines with TV and audio systems and 300 fitness classes every month. Overlooking the lakes at the heart of our Colchester Campus is the Albert Sloman Library. Use our paternoster lift to reach six floors of research resources, specialist materials, and of course a whole lot of books. It's the perfect environment for quiet reading or that last-minute essay. The library is open 24/7 during term time and has a wide range of learning resources; books, journals, British and foreign-newspapers, microfilms and audio-visual materials - most of course materials are online as well so you can access this from home just as well. 📕📚📑

89% of our graduates are in employment or further study (Graduate Outcomes 2023).

As Britain's oldest recorded development, the city of Colchester is steeped in over two thousand years of history after being founded by the Ancient Romans, and it's also where our main university campus is located. But it's not just Colchester that has lots for you to explore. Chelmsford is the first and only city in Essex, showcasing a bustling city centre packed full of shops and restaurants, it's also the birthplace of radio. A little further north of the county you'll find the village Tiptree, so famous for producing jam, The Queen marked their 125th celebration with a visit by Her Majesty🍓🍒. Our Colchester Campus is also easily reached from London and Stansted Airport in under one hour, with 3 train stations near by🚅🛫
