Why is UCL considered better than Manchester and Durham?

And which is ultimately a better choice for an international student (wanting to study physics/astronomy)? I mean Manchester apparently has better research facilities, bigger campus, more personnel and funding and also a richer history. Why is then UCL considered better?
Considered better by whom, and for what?

For physics, in purely academic terms, I'd probably consider Manchester stronger personally (unless you are specifically interested in planterary science, perhaps - which UCL has some specialism in).

However for becoming an investment banker then UCL is "better" because it's a "target university".

Really depends on your aims.

Considered by QS. Manchester is somewhere around the 50s while UCL is at a whopping 9th position. In physics also they ranked UCL higher than Manchester, with positions at 27 and 44 respectively. And while the following one is from a less reliable source (someone in a US uni help Discord), I've also heard that internationally UCL gets more doors unlocked than Manchester as well.

Rankings are not to be relied on as they cannot be replicated. Manchester is better for some degrees than UCL.

Would you say Manchester is better for physics/astronomy?

Whilst I agree the rankings are a bit of a joke, what makes you make this assertion? Industry links or simply that you studied there?

It's knowledgr of what that department has done/ is doing. I didn't study there - I'm a teacher so am involved in advising students.
