How can I navigate a career transition?

Hi all! I graduated a year ago with a Masters degree in biology and, despite applying like mad, have not managed to secure any entry-level research job (lab technician, junior researcher/scientist, paid intern). I'd like to work in plant sciences, specifically investigating host-pathogen interactions. I may do a PhD later down the line, but would like to acquire some work experience before then. Since May, I've been working in a tech startup and am increasingly worried that I won't be able to go back into research. Any tips on how to re-enter science? Should I just bite the bullet and send emails to relevant PIs to do an unpaid internship? Would appreciate any tips and advice. Thanks all!
