The Student Room Group

Stressed out degree choices

I wouldn’t usually ask student room but I have no choice no one to turn to and I’m so stressed
So I do chemistry maths and psychology . My current predicted grades are at an A* C C but there is a possibility that one of the C may go to a B . See I’m on of those people who are pretty much the same ability for every subject and I love all the subjects I did at gcses and A level the same . I have no idea how to identify what I enjoy except for the fact that I’ve participated in the Pathway banking and finance Sutton trust program and work experience in finance. Somehow I’m leaning towards finance however people keep telling me that it’s too specific the hours are long and during my work experience all the staff were white European ( I’m a hijabi) so I felt really out of place. I also like maths and I’m really good at psychology but I don’t think I enjoy maths enough to do a whole math degree at uni . I have considered doing chemistry at uni but I got a E in my end of year exams and e no one thinks I’m capable but at the same time when I self study chemistry I really enjoy it but I hate it in class. I’m so confused I don’t know what to do and I feel like it’s too late to do all the research and extracurricular for any degree but finance cos I’m in year 13 and my statement should be done now but at the same time I don’t know whether I should do finance and I don’t know if it’s versatile enough . Some one help

Hi! What I'm going to say are all opinion and not based on any ''fact'' as such, but are from my experiences

Theres very little jobs in Psychology unless you want to be in schools, councilling or a therapist. If one of these interests you this could work at uni, if not I wouldn't persue this any further

There are loads of ethnic groups in the financing world! So do not let this fact put you off. The hours are long on the university course, however any high level dissertation based subject will be the same and you should be prepared for this going into any uni course - its not all just partying and getting drunk! (not after first year anyway...)

Are you sure you want to persue university at all? It's perfectly okay not to do university (either for a year or two, or even not at all!). People hype up university to be this big thing guarenteeing a job but employers many times look at your skills and experiences moreso than a degree. Have you thought about taking a year out and working full time in a financial / other employment setting? Or getting an apprenticeship or day release course from a company specialising in something you're interested in near you?

University is 3-4 years of your life and around £50,000 - do the benefits suit you?

You may find that university is definitely for you - in that case I really implore you to go to university open days and look and several courses - even ones you may not at first think are your thing! It's okay to have a gap year too to stop you rushing into it

Don't panic.

Plan a gap-year, work your socks off this year to get the best A level grades you can, and then apply next year for 2025 entry.
This gives you more time to go to Open Days and listen to lots of different subject talks and make a more careful decision about what you want to do - and where you will feel comfortable. Nowhere does it say you can only apply to Uni straight from school.

Have a calm look at the subjects in this list from just one Uni - https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/2024
Look carefully at the subject descriptions, and all the joint subject variants available, and think about what actually interests you. It doesnt have to be finance - with your subjects, a whole range of degree subjects and careers are open to you.
