Change your beliefs
Very true, this is the most important. We are defined and controlled by our parents, family beliefs and religious leaders beliefs up to the age of about 21 or when we leave home.

There is an approximate overlap age (age 4 to 21) when a school or University indoctrinates its own directives and value belief systems. Children are especially malleable and inclined to unquestioningly believe someone else's view point - hence politician's desire to lower the age to vote.

Once you have true financial and life independence you change your beliefs about what you know of the world and those people around you - for better or for worse. Life events make you rethink and reassess everything you know. That is dependent on who you happen to meet, the background those people come from and your own life experiences. Life experience changes beliefs. The only time this may not happen is if you remain insular and fail to meet others of opposing views or differing life styles or are afraid to listen other people's view points. Often this is due to other's coercive beliefs or control. True freedom is being able to hold a belief, to be able to calmly defend it and to have it challenged by others without fear of being labelled racist, bigoted, sexist or many more so often used.

You can remain entrenched in someone else's value systems and be so afraid to disrespect or stray from those restraints, you can never experience life to the full. That is why 'elderly' people should be the wisest (though not always) because they have had a greater perspective of life events.
