Switching from Architecture to Engineering

Hi! So I’d like some suggestions to study which Engineering degree if I am switching from Architecture. I love architecture but would like to broaden my options a bit

By "which Engineering degree", do you mean Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, etc. or do you mean a specific course at a specific university?

You say that you're "switching from Architecture"; does that mean you're currently at university study architecture? And you want to drop out (from a course you love) into order to start a new degree and "broaden my options a bit"?

Are you concerned that an Architecture has a single career path - into Architecture?

Sorry for the confusing word use (English is my second language). I’m a high school student and what I mean is I’m looking into different majors to study aside from Architecture. It’ll be nice to connect the two fields in a way even though they’re vastly different

Understood. How about something like Architectural Engineering? Here are some options there:
Architectural Engineering BEng (Hons) at University of Liverpool
Architectural Engineering (BEng) at Cardiff University
Architectural Engineering BEng (Hons) at Loughborough University

Or how about a join honours degree, combining Architecture and Structural Engineering? Here are some of those:
Structural and Architectural Engineering BEng (Hons) at University of Bath
BEng Structural Engineering with Architecture at University of Edinburgh
Structural Engineering with Architecture MEng (Hons) at University of Dundee

Or perhaps something like this:
Engineering & Architectural Design MEng at UCL

There are lot of options out there.
I would just caution that architectural engineering is not the same as architecture and will not qualify you to work as an architect or use the title "architect" in the UK.

Some of the above noted joint honours courses may do however - they will need to be RIBA/ARB accredited/prescribed (this should be stated on the page if they are - if its not stated assume it isn't).

Some may or may not be accredited by an engineering body to meet the academic requirements for CEng status but this isn't actually required to work as an engineer in the UK so less of a problem than the architecture accreditation.

Sound advice. Thank you for adding it.

Prsom, and for your posts above!

Yes I think sometimes people think it means "architecture and engineering" rather than being a subfield of engineering unto itself

But as illustrated there are joint honours courses in that vein which do have dual accreditation (or at least there were). I think Sheffield also has one (or they did but may have since been closed!).

Did a quick Google, this is the course at Sheffield. Accredited by both JBM (Engineering) and RIBA (Architecture, Part 1).

Hi there ,
Technically no matter which engineering you switch to , switching from architecture to engineering can be a rewarding transition, because both fields involve problem-solving, creativity, and design principles. The top three I would advise you to consider would be the following :
Civil Engineering: Given your background in architecture the best fit would be civil engineering. It involves designing and constructing infrastructure projects such as buildings, roads, bridges, and water supply systems. There are lots of different sectors you can settle into like structural engineering, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, or geotechnical engineering within this field.
Structural Engineering: This specialisation focuses specifically on designing and analysing structures to make sure they can withstand various loads and environmental conditions. With your understanding of architectural design, you could contribute to the safety and aesthetics of structures.
Environmental Engineering: If you're interested in sustainability and the environmental impact of engineering projects, this field might be a good fit . Environmental engineers work on issues such as water and air pollution control, waste management, and sustainable development.
There are a lot of options for you and they're not limited to the ones I mentioned but this is a good place to start , I strongly advise you to see what universities have to offer with degrees similar to architecture .
I hope this helps .

Hi there,

There are three engineering degrees which go hand in hand with architecture: civil, structural and architectural. The names of the degree may vary depending on which university you attend.

Civil engineering is the most commonly known and has a lot of job prospects following. Civil engineers and architects generally work together both in university and in the working world as each are dependent on each other to produce designs. Structural/architectural are similar to civil except they focus on the structures/buildings portion whereas civil may be broader venturing into roads, utilities, traffic etc.

However, if you enjoy architecture I see no reason you would need to switch. architecture also had broader options other than being exactly an architect - you can go into the engineering side later on as well.

Hope this helped,
Sophie
