What’s the best accommodation options?
I live in Sheffield and also visited Sheffield University's open day. Basically what the university and what you see online in general is they will tell you about the lets say, less nice student accom. I spoke to a student on campus and he recommended this place called Allen Court, I was told by the university student himself it's nicer than all the other places, but a bit more expensive. I have a friend whose older sister studies at Sheffield University too and she also got her accommodation there.

Hi! im also a prospective student so don't take my word as gospel, as i havent actually lived there (yet), but i think ive done some pretty in depth research.

First off we've got city accommodation, which includes the Allen Court the person above me mentions. Its close to the uni buildings and lectures and stuff if that is a priority for you, and also i believe often gets a lot of international students staying there.

Then we have Encliffe/Ranmoor. Now these are the main accomodation, theyre further out, a 30-40 minute walk from the main uni, but they house 4,500 students and so are the kinda hub of students. this is where the majority of people stay, so while it is further id suggest this over city because its pretty likely that the majority of friends you like will live in this double complex, so youll be able to socialise easier. Its got a shop (expensive, as uni shops are), a free gym and a bar and common area/green room.

Encliffe and Ranmoor are associated together but are separated by a road and ranmoor is slightly further up the hill.

Ranmoor is known for being a bit quieter, and going round it on the offers day, it certainly felt that way. its a bit smaller than encliffe and one thing i noticed it has smaller windows? on all but the ground floor, idk why, so it may be a little darker. its also on the hill, like its a zig-zag path up between the blocks, and theres further blocks above. its all a hilly area, encliffe-ranmoor really, but its especially noticible in ranmoor, which feels a lot more compact than encliffe. its all green in their green spaces, even in early march, but the bits i saw didnt really have much space to hang out like in that area. All the blocks there seemed pretty similar in reputation from what ive seen from trawling through the forums. Ranmoor has the gym and an area indoors known as the ridge.

Encliffe is larger, and known for being more social, especially since it has the main bar. down the bottom it has encliffe vale flats, which are shared bathroom, and at the top it has lawrencefireld, and cratcliffe, and some others that to be honest i know next to nothing about. in the middle is the most popular blocks. derwent, howden, stanage and burbage are known as the party blocks, although this changes year on year obvs depending on whose actually living in them. the block is really made by the people, yk? the reputation comes from oft most social people choosing the most central blocks most closest to the bar and community space, the edge. stanage, burbage and howden are also oft referred to as loudest due to their close proximity to the taxi rank.

then there is yarncliffe and frogatt, which ive often seen referred to as social, but you can sleep better, as theyve got the front blocks acting as a sound barrier between them and the edge and the taxi rank. behind them is the paddock, which has a path down the hill or steps to get to from the higher bit (like i said its a hill yk, but its got big flat enough areas), and there is a pond too, so pretty view for those looking back that way when its all green. at the bottom, youve got the encliffe vale flats i already mentioned, as well as rivelin, and millstone. those are apparently quieter, being further from the edge moreso than yarncliffe, frogatt and the rest, but still are in the encliffe area so benefit from that social scene more so than ranmoor.

ill finish off by saying that any "stereotypes" of blocks you many see on the forums (ex: ranmoor being super quiet and having no social scene, etc..) or even the things on levels of socialness and quietness ive mentioned here, have to be taken with a pinch of salt, because people sometimes exaggerate, and its online, yada yada but also because the inhabitants change year on year. like you might end up with a whole bunch of super social people in a block known for being on the quieter side, so that stereotype doesnt apply for your year or block. nothing social wise is totally set in stone
