BASIC stamp and interfacing with a HD44780 style display

will it work?

I am currently trying to do this as part of a coursework project but having real problems (the display does not give any response - despite the stamp appearing to be functioning as programmed)

I am just using the pbasic high/low commands to control the outputs (should I be doing this a different way?)

is it possible the display is faulty - how could I check this (their are no others around to cross-reference against)

is it possible I am just generally doing it wrong?
