What happens if you don't make your firm offer but make your insurance offer?

Although I'm not applying to univeristy until next year, I'd like to know if you didn't meet the grade requirements for your firm (conditional) offer but you do for your insurance offer, what process do you have to go through? Are you automatically accepted into that university or do you have to talk to them?
I've read pretty much all the articles in TSR about university applications and i'm fully informed. It's just this that I'm curious about. Any help will be appreciated. :smile:

You get automatically accepted into that uni, although it might be possible for you to still get into your firm choice if you beg well enough over the phone.
