How do you mean help? The STP is only open to people who already have university degrees, so you couldn't do this scheme as experience towards a medical degree application.

If you wanted to do a medical degree then go in to this scheme you could, but it seems a very round about way to go.

ahh okay my bad.
Hi just forwarding some information...I emailed to see if I had moved up the reserve list at all. I have not moved and they said that all offers for Cardiac and Vascular (I am on reserve for both) have been accepted so it is now very unlikely that I will get an offer.

I am absolutely gutted to have come so close in two specialisms but I will be applying again next year.

I wouldn't give up all hope yet, some people may have accepted but still be unsure and drop out at a later date, or be dependant on grades. Some may even be applying for other jobs/courses etc.
I am interested in applying however my degree will be a Bsc in Physiology. I have looked at the different areas and although my degree is listed as an appropriate degree for entry into the physiological science areas it isn't for the life sciences, which I am more interested in doing. I am doing an internship and hoping to get work experience in a hospital lab but unsure if it would still be possible for me to apply to say the blood sciences strand etc.

Thanks

It won't hurt to try, although you will have a challenge proving you have more relevant experience than someone who has an 'appropriate' degree.

You could consider doing an MSc in something directly relevant and then reapplying.

thanks, well I am basically transferring from a broad course called biological and medical sciences to physiology honours in my final year. I have been able to pick modules and i initially began to chose the modules for physiology. I could possibly not transfer and i would get a degree in biological sciences but would this be any better?

It's my understanding that each hospital has a specific number of places for certain specialities, but I don't think these are assigned to individuals from the beginning. For example, if there were 4 medical physics trainees in a hospital and 2 places each for radiotherapy and non-ionising, then I guess you'd have a choice to a certain extent between those two?

Hospitals get funding for a specific specialism. Bigger hospitals with several trainees could be funded, for example, 2 Radiotherapy 2 Nuclear Medicine and 2 Rad Safety. The decision as to who goes where will probably be left until part way through the last rotation, and there is only a problem if everyone wants to go into the same area. So dsmtrst is right, trainees would rank their preferences. Smaller hospitals may only have 1 or 2 places and if they have only bid for one specialisation then there probably won't be a choice. I'm fortunate to be in a hospital with choice, but I know of several other trainees that were told on day one that they will be doing Radiotherapy (which is pretty good anyway!).

EDIT - Non-Ionising specialisation is quite rare (I don't know of anywhere offering it).

Whilst I strongly suggest you call the NHS Recruitment line for clarification. I just wanted to let you know that I was offered a place in Audiology this year on the basis of a degree in biological science that did not include any human biology content. I was honest about this gap in my education during the interview and (although I have done some reading in this area) I was not tested on my knowledge of audiology whatsoever. It seems that the recruiters may be prepared to overlook a degree that is not directly applicable if you are able to demonstrate high scientific aptitude/your CV is well rounded etc. so don't give up just yet!

PM me if you do not yet have the recruitment line number and I'll pass it on. They are very helpful and will be able to answer your question far more accurately than any of us can.

Good luck!
Just out of interest. What STP have you all been accepted onto and what are your degrees in?

I want to get onto the STP scheme for reproductive science, think that comes under their cellular/life sciences catagory. But the NHS grad scheme are being kind of vague about exactly what degree will get me onto the programme. Although it seems my Open Uni degree won't get me on the programme regardless of content due to lack of practical lab experience that comes with distance learning.

So i was wondering those of you who are on the programme, what did you get on and what degree did you do, so i can see what might be a better option for me to switch to.

Cheers.

Hi everyone,

I have a 2.1 in Medical Microbiology (graduated in 2008) and got a phone call last night to say someone has dropped out of a placement and i'm second on the reserve list for Micro. I've been offered the job but it's in London and I live in Yorkshire with my 3 children.

I am so torn with what to do. I have been trying to get in this field since I graduated and to turn it down would be stupid but I don't know if I want to uproot my children, sell our house and move their schools etc.

I could apply again next year but there is a chance I wouldn't even get on the reserve and the oppertunity would be lost. I think you have to be one of the top 3 candidates to even stand a chance of getting your first or even second chioce of placement.

Should I just go???? They have given me the weekend to decide :frown:

I was accepted onto cytopathology which is also cellular science, and i've just finished a degree in biomedical science

I'm not sure on the answer to your question, but here are some other questions that might help:

1. Would the children forgive/forget me for taking them away from their school, friends and family?

2. (If separated from children's [other parent]) Would I be denying my children regular interaction with their [other parent]?

3. (If not) What does my partner think about it all? Are they willing to move as well?

4. Will I be able to manage a full time job (with variable commute), but still be able to be a good parent?

5. Is there anything or anyone I rely on in Yorkshire (family/friends) that I wouldn't have available in London?

Since you've been applying for this kind of job for several years you clearly want it a lot. Since there's no clearly right decision, whatever you do, you'll be alright. Let us know what you decide.

I think this would be a good idea also, then we could put it all on the very first page so people could find all the info in one area.

Hello everyone,

I have been accepted onto the blood sciences scheme this year but I still have not heard anything directly from my hospital. I was wondering if anyone else was in this position, just to calm my nerves!

Thanks in advance!

Which trust are you waiting to hear from? I'm in the same position but for cardiac science. If I don't hear anything by the end of today, I might ring my trust tomorrow..

I'm in the same position for MedPhys/Liverpool. Each hopsital has different HR departments with different schedules. They're just taking their time I guess.

That said, a tiny niggle in the back of my head is worried that they've sent it to the wrong address or the job offer email was a mistake or they forgot about me or the hospital has closed down, or a million other irrational worries.

If I don't hear/receive anything by August I am going to start phoning people.

Yeah I haven't heard anything yet either, from Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells. It's a bit of a pain really, as I can't start looking for somewhere to live until I know what hospital I'll be based at, and as I currently live in Liverpool/Swansea it's going to be enough hassle finding somewhere to live as it is!
Hey Guys,

This is my first time posting on this site but saw this convo and figured Id ask a question or 2 of my own. I did my BSc in Microbio 2 years ago and since have been travelling about world, getting that travelling bug out of my system. Now im back in the UK and have decided I want to become an Clinical Embryologist. By the looks of it the best way into this career in the UK is through the Scientist Training Program (STP). 2 Obvious problems, firstly skill fade may hamper my gaining a place and secondly I have missed the application cycle for 2012 (entry closed on 27th February 2012).

Considering doing a Self funded MSc in Biomedical Science and then attemting to get into the STP on the next cycle, whenever that starts. Does anyone have any general advice for me here?

Cheers guys!
