Wait... I am in Sixth form, just finished yr 12. and want to do medicine. Would this scheme help me?

How do you mean help? The STP is only open to people who already have university degrees, so you couldn't do this scheme as experience towards a medical degree application.

If you wanted to do a medical degree then go in to this scheme you could, but it seems a very round about way to go.

Hi just forwarding some information...I emailed to see if I had moved up the reserve list at all. I have not moved and they said that all offers for Cardiac and Vascular (I am on reserve for both) have been accepted so it is now very unlikely that I will get an offer.

I am absolutely gutted to have come so close in two specialisms but I will be applying again next year.

I am interested in applying however my degree will be a Bsc in Physiology. I have looked at the different areas and although my degree is listed as an appropriate degree for entry into the physiological science areas it isn't for the life sciences, which I am more interested in doing. I am doing an internship and hoping to get work experience in a hospital lab but unsure if it would still be possible for me to apply to say the blood sciences strand etc.

It won't hurt to try, although you will have a challenge proving you have more relevant experience than someone who has an 'appropriate' degree.

You could consider doing an MSc in something directly relevant and then reapplying.

It's my understanding that each hospital has a specific number of places for certain specialities, but I don't think these are assigned to individuals from the beginning. For example, if there were 4 medical physics trainees in a hospital and 2 places each for radiotherapy and non-ionising, then I guess you'd have a choice to a certain extent between those two?

Just out of interest. What STP have you all been accepted onto and what are your degrees in?

I want to get onto the STP scheme for reproductive science, think that comes under their cellular/life sciences catagory. But the NHS grad scheme are being kind of vague about exactly what degree will get me onto the programme. Although it seems my Open Uni degree won't get me on the programme regardless of content due to lack of practical lab experience that comes with distance learning.

So i was wondering those of you who are on the programme, what did you get on and what degree did you do, so i can see what might be a better option for me to switch to.

Hi everyone,

I have a 2.1 in Medical Microbiology (graduated in 2008) and got a phone call last night to say someone has dropped out of a placement and i'm second on the reserve list for Micro. I've been offered the job but it's in London and I live in Yorkshire with my 3 children.

I am so torn with what to do. I have been trying to get in this field since I graduated and to turn it down would be stupid but I don't know if I want to uproot my children, sell our house and move their schools etc.

I could apply again next year but there is a chance I wouldn't even get on the reserve and the oppertunity would be lost. I think you have to be one of the top 3 candidates to even stand a chance of getting your first or even second chioce of placement.

Should I just go???? They have given me the weekend to decide
