Oh!! This is the best thread I've seen in ages and ages!

Hello fellow kindred spirits; shall I introduce myself?

-I'm a teetotal first year at Magdalen College, Oxford. (Yes, the same place as that other poster up there, and yes, we did bond over our mutual shudder at the sight of alcohol. )
-I've never drunk alcohol, nor do I intend do.
-Additionally, I've never been clubbing...
-..not even in Freshers' Week....
-...and I survived. In fact, I'm doing very well with a bunch of fabulous friends, most of whom don't drink either.
-AND I'm a linguist! I do German and Spanish. :woo:

I think this thread is absolutely BRILLIANT and so wish I'd had one of these last year! Nevertheless, I'm probably going to stick around (if you guys want me, that is) and I'm totally open to questions, either on here or on my Twitter on my sig, whether it be about surviving Freshers' without alcohol/clubbing, uni/Oxford in general, or about modern languages!

See you soon :awesome:

Ahh! Willkommen! The miracle of finding TWO teetotal linguists! :woo: 'Tis a pleasure! What is German like at Oxford, is it just loads of Goethe and other general literature thrown at you as I'm often told?

Pretty much, although it had different feet . And that's because it's one of the coolest cakes available .

That I cannot argue with!

I see. Well, I can't imagine that the bed won't be large enough, and nor can I imagine you not having ample space for books and a television. If I can fit all the books I bring with me to university in my room, quite frankly anybody can.

I'm sure you will be fine. The colossal majority of people are and as long as you're responsible enough to not let work pile up there shouldn't be an issue. Well, even if I work for ten hours a day that still leaves six hours for other things, and often socialising involves working in somebody's room.

No? That's odd - I spend most of my university life drinking tea, it would seem. Oh, that's why one is extremely careful - a collapse is, of course, a disaster.

Hmm, I see. Well, I am all but certain that you won't have a problem. And joining societies is a superb idea - I'm part of two or three and they do make university life that bit more enjoyable.

I do hope so, I like at least a little bit of space. Wondering if I should buy a few little bits of furniture or something, just like a beanbag or something, so people aren't constantly standing in my room if they want to hang out. I feel dreadful urges to write a shopping list already, but I don't want to tempt fate :frown:

That makes sense, although I struggle with concentration for five. XD I'm sure I'll get used to it, at least it's not as though I'm doing a subject that bores me anymore.

Indeed, I think I'm met with more disdainful looks when I say I don't drink tea than I do for saying I don't drink alcohol. :P but a sneaky hobnob dunk when no-one's looking never harmed anyone...

I've heard that many societies end up doing socials which more often than not involve going drinking. Is that not the case at yours?

You wont need a beanbag. You just sit on someones bed/ floor/ their desk chair. With the socials, it depends what societies you're a member of. With the medics orchestra, most of the socials are like going to this one place in Sheff for pizza and salsa dancing, but on the other hand, almost all of the sociology society's socials are bar crawls. Our linguists are quite fond of facepaint and dressing up - and alcohol.

Thanks  I just know that if I sit on the floor, I'll never get back up again because there's too much of me . :colondollar: Eh, the others will have to suffer...:cool:

WELCOME!! :smile: :woo::happy2:

Surely I can't be the only non-drinker going to uni this year? Not putting down those that do, of course, live and let live and all that, but just to make me feel a little more secure, I thought we teetotallers/occasional drinkers could do with our little corner of the forum for Freshers this year.

Please keep me company, I have orange juice.

OmGee you don't drink??

Me neither :smug:

Welcome :ahee: ..* sips on orange juice**

I can't cross my legs, so I tend to end up stretched out like a daddy-long-legs (and then I end up scrambling around like one trying to grab onto something to be able to stand again). It seems I need a Stannah chairlift just to get up... :colondollar:

Oh, you definitely should! If one is going to be hosting others space to sit is a must. Having said that, on US Election night I had about thirteen people come up to watch and people did have to sit on the floor. They were fine with it.

Yes, once one starts doing precisely what they want to everything becomes easier.

You don't drink tea?! :lolwut: I'm not sure I can deal with that...:eek3:

Yes, that is often the case here. The football team, which I play for, have football drinks every week - though I don't go. Some societies don't, but all the sporting ones do as far as I know.

Anyone planning on going to goldsmiths or even anywhere else in London? I think it's going to be difficult to avoid nights out the the big LDN hahahaha.
