I dont think many people would disagree that baines is better than evra. Its just how much is it worth financially, and is it worth replacing evra when it could have knock on effects in the dressing room. Largely i dont think the benefits of baines on the pitch exceed the costs- although i havent met him, maybe he is a leader as well.
BBC:

Manchester United have had a bid in the region of £12m rejected out of hand by Everton for full-back Leighton Baines but the Premier League champions are expected to make an improved bid as David Moyes looks to reunite with the England international.
Evra did okay last season, I think people rate him higher than he really did though, he scored a few goals yes but defensively he didn't look as sharp as he was a couple of years ago imo.

Baines is a sensible replacement, if we can get some money for Evra who isn't getting any younger and replace him with Baines then I think that would be a very sensible bit of business for us, particularly as Baines is at his peak whilst Evra really isn't anymore (imo)
Evra had a good campaign the one just gone, attacking wise he was sound - chipping in with a few goals aswell - and defensively OK (wasn't caught out of position too many times), and he would need replacing but not so sure it is now. I think we could get one season out of him but maybe the club and Moyes' thinking is that Baines is a good choice to buy now.

Baines defensively probably at a similiar level to Evra but got a set-piece option (scored a belter against Newcastle) but latter has got more experience having played games at European and international level.

If we can get Baines for £10-12m which is what Everton have turned down then great. Not too sure comfortable with £15m plus being paid for a guy who I feel may be at his best for another two years before he starts to dip. But maybe Luke Shaw of Southampton could be checked out to see if he could be a permanent, long-term option.

If we are going to spend on a left back (which I don't really think we should focus on) we should be going for someone younger, i.e Alaba. We've got Fabio too.
Everton saying they won't sell Baines at any cost but tbh, I imagine that's a tactic to try and get more money or if Baines does want to go, which he doesn't seem publicly to say, to hand in a transfer request. I think we'll go back offering £15m but no more than that I hope.

£20m or less would be a good price imo, Baines is at his peak and will be for the next 3-4 seasons at least, I would imagine he would be a starter for us as well, and he knows the new manager, given all that I think £20m or less in the current market is very reasonable.

Leighton Baines probably hasn't fallen out with Lily Savage either, unlike Patrice Evra's hissy fit in South Africa during the World Cup.
it's absolutely shocking that we have been linked with the likes of Strootman and Thiago and out of the blue the first signing will be Baines. FFS Moyes, go and grab fellani rather than baines.

He's 29 soon for heavens sake, Evra's defending has been pretty ****e tbh

Hmm...

I'd hope we can get him for £15m or maybe just around the £17m mark but I was worried, with him being 28, how long he can muster up the consistency that's been so highly appreciated at Everton? I remember him being a tad injury prone but his stats in terms of appearances are very good over the last 3-4 seasons so it's a case of price/consistency.

We could get Baines; and maybe Luke Shaw next summer with a potential latter taking over the former gradually if Shaw continues to show potential.

Evra, at 32, if we got a big offer from Monaco then it would be tempting. He's a character in the dressing room and experience but it's not as if we're lacking in that so it wouldn't be a major loss in that respect.
Listen guys, If Evra was sold to Monoco for £10 million and we buy someone who is at a Younger age and ADDS to the team more (great freekicks) for around £15 million max. That means getting a player admittedly better than Evra and only cost us £5 MILLION (net)!

This logic at its best.

You lot should take a look at this guy's freekicks, who needs ronaldo when you got Baines!!?

Right back mate.
If we can't get Baines for less than 15 million then we shouldn't be bothering.

He's 28!

Classic over valuation of an English player.

This tbh, if he was 24-25 I would snap him up but Evra did fine this season, there are positions we need to sort out with far higher priority.

Not sure I'd agree with that. Around 29 is the age where many a fullback has fallen apart.

I would imagine Baines is as much a free kick specialist as Ashley Young or Ronaldo. That is to say, they score one in about 20 attempts and everyone raves about them.

And she was complaining that our first signing might be Baines, which it won't be.
