Does anyone know if the studios for the Fine Art & History of Art Combined Hons. at Goldsmiths are in a separate building to the students doing just Fine Art?
It seemed that way when I went for my interview, which I thought was kind of weird, but I don't know if I've just got a bit confused...

When I went for interview there I got the same impression haha. It seemed to me that the joint honours were based in the Richard Hoggart building which was why when attending the interview you were asked to view the studios of you wished.

Yes, they are in a separate building, which I think is pretty weird too. Apparently the single honours are spread out over three buildings.

Hey there guys, congrats on the amazing offers you've all gotten! I'm hoping to apply to the Slade during the next academic year, however I'm not sure if my academic achievements meet their requirements. I had AAB for my A-level results and did three subjects for AS, however it states on the Slade's site that they require 'three GCE A levels at Grades A,B,B, plus a pass in an additional Advanced Subsidiary level subject[...]' After doing A-levels I did a foundation course, where I got a distinction, and afterwards I decided to take a gap year which I'm currently on, so I will be 21 when I apply in September which will make me a 'mature student'. I was wondering if the fact that I had a distinction on foundation and that I'm a 'mature student' might make up for me not having done a fourth AS subject? I feel like I might be being somewhat pedantic, but the fact that they state that having a fourth pass at AS is a requirement makes me concerned they'll just reject me right off the bat. I'd be so grateful if someone could help with my predicament!

Hi there.
Slade have said that they never dismiss someone out of hand because of their academic credentials, and will always give consideration to the applicants portfolio. As you will be a mature student this is likely to help your situation, but I would recommend contacting the Slade to discuss your application. If they do say that you definitely need the AS level to be considered equally then you could always take one as an independent candidate this year/next year at your old school. Hopefully this wont be necessary.
Good luck!

Yup, still kind of torn between there and Edinburgh, but I'm leaning towards goldsmiths I think, I feel like if I didn't go there I might massively regret it in a few years?

Eeeeew I dont wanna see you around London...... Haha nah its good news, well dont pick it because of the name and how little get places and all that. Ultimately you gotta choose the place you feel where you can progress and grow. Which one gives ya butterflies when ya think about studying there?

hi, i agree with what the others said. But i would contact them now- just so you can know what to expect when it comes to the application process next year (just incase they ask you to do an AS subject- which i'm sure they won't, because u've already progressed onto a very advanced level). Also i know lots of people that will be going to the slade straight from a-levels... because the competition was mainly based on interviews and portfolios, so i don't think that u'll be at a disadvantage for not doing an AS subject... but i would definitely contact them now- just for more reassurance.
if they do ask for an AS subject- check if you can do an Extended Project in your old school/college because it counts for an AS qualification

hope this helps

Brockley is pretty far out, I don't think there's much going on there at all. If you want fun in South London look at Brixton and Peckham.
Is any one on here going to Leeds college of Art? Or has any views they could share with me on it? I've got offers from Goldsmiths, Falmouth, Brighton, Bristol, and Leeds college of Art and I'm trying to decide where to go (need to respond by 5th June)

Congratulations on your offers!
I know a few people who go to Leeds and they seem happy there, but the one person who does Fine Art says it feels a lot like school and she would prefer a more independent environment. I don't think its a controlling environment though, she didn't really elaborate. :/ She did say that it's a really lovely city and they have great facilities. Personally, I like that they specialise within Fine Art. I think it gives focus to a students practice, without the implied confinement of doing a specialised degee.
Is there anything specific that you're looking for in an art course?

Thanks for your response! sorry it took so long to say thankyou. I am concerned about it being like school too. I'm quite stuck to be honest and seriously considering re-applying as i don't feel that happy with any of my choices, but perhaps I'm being too picky. If I re-applied it would be for places like Glasgow and Edinburgh for Sculpture but I'm not sure how restrictive a specialized course would be (I didn't apply to them initially because they only offered specialized degrees).

There's nothing wrong with being picky when it's costing you £9000 a year. If you don't feel like any of your offers are the right place for you then there is no harm in reapplying to others. The offers you got are from good places, especially Goldsmiths, so I think it's likely you'd get into Edinburgh and Glasgow next year. It's weird how what you're looking for in a university can change so much in a year. When I first applied (before doing a foundation) I got an offer from Edinburgh and I really liked the place, but decided 5 years was too long/expensive. I indented on applying for second year entry this year, but ended up applying to completely different places because my needs had changed.

Edinburgh does offer a degree in Fine Art but it is quite theory heavy. I don't think the courses will be restrictive, particularly not with sculpture, and it might be more useful to have specialised sculpture tutors. The main reason I didn't want a specialised degree was that I would be specialising in painting, and most students on painting degrees tend to be quite traditional and I felt I'd miss out on the variety available in art. It wasn't so much that the course was restrictive, just that it attracted all the same sort of painters. I don't think that would be a problem with sculpture though.

What is it that Edinburgh and Glasgow have that your current offers don't?
You might want to be careful about burning your bridges with the current universities you have offers from, if you might find that next year your not so crazy about Edinburgh and Glasgow either. Although, having said that, you wouldn't really be in a worse off position if you definitely don't want to go to any of them.

Most of me is still pining after Slade, and if everything goes tits-up at Goldsmiths I'll definitely be re-applying, but I figured I'd give Goldsmiths a chance as it's got such a good reputation and I'd really like to be in London. Still not convinced it's the right place for me, but I'm feeling a lot more positive than I was a few weeks ago.
Wow, this ended up being pretty long. Hope it helped a bit.

If you still feel it is not suitable for you when you finish the first year in Goldsmiths, is there any possibility that you can transfer to another place and continue the second year study? (such as Slade) This is also a problem I am confused now....
I also get offer from Goldsmiths but I don't want to start university in this year. I recently contact with the college and ask them whether I could apply a gap year... Hope they can admit it...
