Has anyone got any tips on how to know if someone is taken or not?
It feels so embarrassing the thought of just asking, especially if they are!

Body language? If they realise that you are asking them out they (and they are 'taken') they might be more friendly instead?

This is what today's society has become.
I'd say casually arrange a group get-together, especially if you're both in a good social circle. Then you could say 'why not bring your boyfriend/girlfriend', and then they'll tell you

Ask friends? Facebook stalk? Casj bring up the topic

Ask them or if you're friends on facebook it might say on there. Either way only way you can know for sure is to ask.
Just ask, but try to be subtle. Casually insert into a conversation 'so, do you have a BF/GF? Don't mean to pry, just curious'
Just ask if they have a boyfriend/girlfriend... It's not hard.
They should tell you
