Philosophy. Ah right, I heard that colleges sometimes make higher offers if they were going to reject to but wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt, so hopefully it's just what you said instead.

They make offers very much with the hope and assumption that you will meet them.

Yeah I have an offer. I don't think there's any disparity between Oxf and Cam regarding FM--both much prefer you to do it officially but you still have alright chances without it. I recommend self teaching A2 maths leading up to the summer, because I would have been ****ed in my interview if I hadn't done it the previous year haha. There is a website for people in your exact position for self-teaching FM. You can find lots of info on how they regard FM the Cambridge Engineering Department's website.

Don't do M3 before M2, but going over their syllabi before interview is also a good idea.

Thanks for the advice  There's no entrance exam that I have to do beforehand for Cambridge, right? Did you take the TSA? I'm not quite sure what I would specialise in yet so general Engineering at Oxbridge seems like the best option, so I think I will still apply- though I'm not sure I've made good enough choices this past year to be granted an interview at Cambridge. This is a helluva lot of work for something I probably won't even get an interview for lol. :afraid::afraid:

I checked the departmental website- they seem to stress the fact that at least AS Further Maths is needed. It is available at my school, but I swapped last minute for Chemistry to widen my horizons- but it did quite the opposite instead haha.

On that same website it says what various tests there are for each college. Oxford interview far fewer candidates I think--Cambridge interview like 80% of applicants. As long as your average UMS is above 85%, it's worth a try.

So I did a thorough search- basically, only Sidney Sussex and Murray Edwards do not require Further Maths at all. I will probably do AS next year anyway, but will they accept this?? Is there a way for me to put it down on my UCAS? What does everyone generally think of these colleges??

Yes you can put pending exams on UCAS. That's how you also tell them which A-levels you are doing.

Murray Edwards is a women-only college.

However so long as you will be doing FM AS most of the other colleges are also available. Only 7 require FM at full A-level.

Note that the Engineering site also tells you the Admissions procedures for each college, eg do they have tests at interview, or TSA etc. Christ's now usually also sets a requirement to achieve a 1 in STEP 1 (the Cambridge maths entrance exam).

That's alright, since I am a girl lol. (:
Ah, silly question. I see, thank you. I will take the TSA anyway- is STEP 1 the first level, or the top/last? I can't seem to find out on the admissions website. I think I will apply then- I was going to do an open application, but I might just apply to murray edwards to save everyone a bit of time.

There are three STEP papers, I, II and III. I is the easier one; II and III are more difficult and of broadly comparable difficulty to each other.

STEP 1 is the "easiest". STEP papers are graded S, 1, 2, 3 with S being the highest grade.

Thank-you, I'm not a huge fan of living with all-females so I think I might try STEP out too. All depends on my results next week to see if its a viable option.
Flipping like 9 days. **** sake. ****s pissing me off now.

But only Christ's, so far, usually ask Engineers to do STEP. And you only do it after you get an offer, not before.

There are almost 30 colleges and only 3 ask for STEP for Engineering, so you may as well not apply there.

Indeed (unless you are particularly good at maths and want to improve your chances of an offer, albeit at the risk of subsequently missing it).

So if you do miss the offer by a fair bit is there any point in contacting them or would rejected on track be final. How do they communicate what they want you to do?
Good luck to the Scottish offer holders today!

Rejected on track is final. The only time they may reverse it is if you're getting a remark and they decide to honour the offer while you wait.

If it's still conditional then that means they're deciding, so you would then phone up and see what they say.

Didn't realise it was after. I think I'm just going to focus on the FM AS for now. The TSA is required beforehand, right? It seems like common sense though.

Don't they have to accept you if your remark makes your grade go up abs you meet your offer by 31st August?
