Why did the NUS choose to oppose UKIP but not other far-left parties?

I find it a bit odd they decided to condemn UKIP, yet did not oppose extremist leftists (communists).

Should the NUS be allowed to be so politically biased? The fact that they influenced decisions to ban UKIP on universities (thankfully overturned) is startling, yet they won't do the same for commies.

Because the nus just like most su's are run by complete idiots who are so far up their own arse they can't see the wood for the trees.

They should keep their noses out of politics etc unless we are talking about extreme organisations like the Muslim brotherhood, BNP, NF or unite against fascism.

The NUS are a bit of a joke politically, to be honest. MatureStudent36 summed it up perfectly, it's the 'vote green and complain about how unfair the world is before taking up that analyst position at Goldman Sachs' phase.

Lets talk about UKIP, they are a right wing party not a left wing party. Economically they are in a similar position to the tories if not a wee bit to the left. I will tell you the left wing parties;

Old Labour
The Greens
Respect ( Who no longer have a seat.
SNP
Sinn Fein

Centre Parties are
New Labour ( Blair+ Brown)
Liberal Democrats and at a stretch DUP

Right Wing
Conservatives
UKIP
BNP( If you include values but economically they are left of the Labour Party.)

Now for NUS, it was probably the ethnicity background of the unions as UKIP are regarded as Racist by many people especially for the bongo bongo land comment. But I do not think that the other left parties and new labour would think they would do aswell as what they did vote wise-I think it is one big man in the pub story but that is just a publicity stunt the tory Farage did to take support from Labour. If the BNP Leader did the same it would have had the same impact, the main two/ three parties from last time losing some votes to them.

Communism isnt an inherently harmful ideology, what wackjob students see UKIP (wrongly) as.

Anyhow the several socialist/communist parties in the UK are unpopular so there was no point.

Good question. As a body that represents all students they should really be impartial politically. Though I suppose they would argue that as a union they seek to further the interests of their members, i.e. students, so opposing cuts and so forth falls under that. Ultimately I don't think many students really care either way, the NUS has essentially no sway over public opinion or public policy (perhaps because it's such a joke), so it's not really a priority of anyone's to make them allow for diverse political opinions.

True, I just wonder what could be done to tackle the political bias? Even if it isn't of much significance.
