Should I choose Bristol over Durham for the LGBT scene?
I really like Durham due to the pretty city itself, and the collegiate system appeals to me.
However, as a lesbian, I'm concerned that there won't be many gay bars or clubnights at Durham, and that the whole atmosphere will be more conservative.
As I'd really like to get a girlfriend at university, would it be stupid to choose Bristol over Durham purely because it has a bigger LGBT scene?

Choose Durham. In the long run, Durham Degree > Bristol Degree, they cost the same but the Durham one will turn more heads and open more doors.
Im sure you wont be the only gay in Durham. Check to see if they have an LGBT society.

Is Durham really that much more prestigious though? I've heard that employers view them pretty equally, they both have A*AA entry requirements for my course.
If you're picking your uni based on LGBT scene good luck maintaining long term employment.

They are on a similar level, Durham, i think is more prestigious. Possibly to do with the collegiate system and overall look. Its often called the Oxbridge Reject pile. Ive not really been that aware of Bristol as a prestigious uni.
Ultimately its where you feel more comfortable and can thrive in.

They're both good universities, my emloyment prospects will be similar either way.
Go to the uni where you think you will be happiest. That calculation can include the LGBT+ scene, but that should be balanced with matters such as liking the collegiate system (though I can assure you that Bristol is pretty too!) and which course you prefer.

The LGBT+ scene is pretty good at durham, one of the college bars has a rainbow night on the same evening as the gay night at one of the pubs/clubs in the city. You're more than likely to meet someone if you join a sports team too!

For me, Durham wins. There's a credibility gap between the entry requirements of some of Bristol's courses, and their actual standards of delivery.

I don't know what the LGBT society is like at Durham, but I can describe the LGBT scene in the city in one word: nonexistent. There is a good scene in Newcastle, but it is a pain in the arse to get home in the evening as trains stop running fairly early.

No, I'm originally from the city and use to heavily socialise with the students. Most of the local gay kids fled at the first opportunity to avoid becoming the only gay in the village.
There is no reason why you couldn't get involved in with stuff in Newcastle as a means to met someone, it just requires a little bit more effort on your part and be mindful of the transport issues (the 18 mile walk at 3 am while drunk is not fun).

Don't pick a university based on that. As someone who (was) a regular at LGBT events, all the girls slept with each other anyway, as did the guys. It's quite rank actually. But I'm positive that this also happens at every other university, assuming they have an active society in the first place; I think it's just a curse of the LGBT societies really.

You've clearly been living under a rock - Durham isn't that much more prestigious than Bristol.
