Should the UK leave or remain in the EU

Scroll to see replies

Absolutely leave.

It's completely wrong that the European Court can over rule the British Court system and decide legislation that affects the UK. Even MEPS in the European parliament can't vote down legislation affecting us unless the other countries agree. Some people say we get money from the EU. What the EU invest back into Britain is nowhere near what we put into the EU. Just think what that money could be used for here, it could be put into the NHS, schools etc.

Please vote leave and give us our sovereignty back.

I still think that we don't gain as much benefits from being in the EU compared to poorer countries in Eastern Europe.
Poland received billions of pounds to build highways, express roads and modern sewage systems. So clearly poorer countries are gaining more from being part of the EU. I don't see the EU giving that amount of money to the UK to build infrastructure.

That's a good thing. It would be obscene if the poorer countries gave more to the richer countries.

Leave. Definitely Leave. Mainly because we have a Prime Minister who talks a load of hot air and is a wimp.

Britain has the strongest economy in the EU. The only real other economic power is Germany whose government will soon be in tatters following the recent migrant crisis they amplified. This very crisis will be forced onto the UK if we do not leave. Poor EU nations are reliant on charity from the UK but they give nothing in return. We are not supported by EU countries; we support them. It is time we stop being told what to do from countries that need our money and take control of our own economy and justice system. The European court of justice is a joke of a democracy and is backward, yet we must follow their orders to the letter. There has been talk of other countries overtaking the UK economy, funnily enough not one member of the EU is, only from the outside world. The IN campaigners will use all sorts of scaremongering which is painful to see as they will mislead and use the fear of the unknown to scare those uneducated on the topic into voting to remain in the EU. If we vote to remain, we will never get the opportunity to have a voice again. Brussels will tighten its ever forceful grip on Britain. It is no wonder the EU is decaying; it must remain so politically correct so that all member states do not veto any legislation (as all it takes is one member to bring the legislation to tatters). The EU was imperative to the British economy in 1965 when we joined the EEC (European Economic Committee) but the EU is now a backward failed political experiment, it is stuck in the past and is not dynamic enough to keep up with world affairs. The migrant crisis highlights how poorly organised the EU is, Germany is the only country to fully support acceptance of migrants of unknown backgrounds, supplying them with European Passports which allows them to travel anywhere within Europe thanks to the freedom of movement act. Why is there any need for such a naive policy when if it was removed, it would stop the mass immigration of unemployed members of the EU to Britain to seek our lenient welfare system? Without the act, the only difference for Britons would be that we would have to show our passport when we get a ferry to Calais. I would certainly much rather this minor discomfort than knowing the tax I pay to the government to improve the quality of British life is being sent off to Poland in the form of child benefits. We are not having a referendum on whether to stay in a reformed EU as Cameron states: there is no reform! It will only result on further restrictions on Britain's say in the running of the Union. We will be forced to take our share of migrants which will only encourage more to travel to the European borders and any 'reforms' Cameron has made are not even legislation! They have not been ratified by any EU members so could be simply reversed the second the referendum turns in favour of remaining. So without a doubt: I am OUT.

When your very first sentence is a blatant lie, you're not off to a good start. Educate yourself.

Let me correct myself then: the UK has the highest GDP per capita. It was a slightly incorrect statement but certainly not a blatant lie.

Aren't we due to overtake German gdp too in the next handful of years anyway?

Yep, we are seeing a larger growth than any other EU economy.

Scaremongering with nothing to back it up. The migration could well benefit Germany in the long-term.

Poor EU nations are reliant on charity from the UK but they give nothing in return. We are not supported by EU countries; we support them.

We're supported by each other, I don't know why people find that so difficult to understand. Our economy benefits hugely from trade as part of the EU. Migrants, including those from poorer EU nations, benefit us and fill skilled jobs. The EU budget largely goes toward science, climate change and security which we all benefit from.

It is time we stop being told what to do from countries that need our money and take control of our own economy and justice system. The European court of justice is a joke of a democracy and is backward, yet we must follow their orders to the letter.

Backward? The EU is making progress in climate change, they've saved our fish populations through quotas, they've protected our human rights, consumer rights and made progress in ensuring all of those rights - privacy, for example - exist online.

Meanwhile our government is trying to repeal the human rights act, encouraging fracking and banning encryption of communications.

Backward? The EU is the only thing left stopping this government from taking us to the ****ing stone age.

As opposed to scaremongering from the leave campaign with false statistics and scary headlines about migrants coming to invade us?

If we vote to remain, we will never get the opportunity to have a voice again. Brussels will tighten its ever forceful grip on Britain. It is no wonder the EU is decaying; it must remain so politically correct so that all member states do not veto any legislation (as all it takes is one member to bring the legislation to tatters). Because part of being a "progressive" civilization is giving refuge to people fleeing poorer, war-torn countries. But of course, doing anything that's not purely in our own interest is bad!

Without the act, the only difference for Britons would be that we would have to show our passport when we get a ferry to Calais. I would certainly much rather this minor discomfort than knowing the tax I pay to the government to improve the quality of British life is being sent off to Poland in the form of child benefits.

But they're not taking benefits. This is factually wrong, it's a lie. EU immigrants contribute significantly more to our economy than they take out. The only group that takes more in benefits than it brings in are British natives.
As it gets to a sidebar poll, It goes from 50/50 to 65/34. Yeah that's right those who aren't interested/ knowledgeable want to stay  Luckily the out campaign is leading in the public as a whole.

Don't know what your source is for that, because every poll I've seen puts remain in the lead.

Excluding online polls on rags like the Daily Mail, where the raging xenophobes congregate and produce a huge bias.

I'm a Brit who lives in Slovenia (an therefore an expat). I study Biopsychology in Koper university in southern Slovenia. The EU provides money for all research done in the area of Neuroscience.

1. An ex-CIA analyst called Michael Baer (google him) who was a specialist for Iran, Yugoslavia and Libya. He said that the world is changing rapidly and if Britain leaves the EU there will be consequences for both Britain and Europe.
The only man who wants Britain out of the EU is Vladimir Putin and don't think Putin likes Britain. We are still seen as the "old enemy" and the "evil empire". So far Britain has been the country that has pushed the EU to put additional sanctions on Russia and he would love to see us go.

2. The USA is very much in favour of Britain staying in the EU. The Americans know whats going on. A Brexit would give a rise to far right extremist groups throughout Europe. This has been the case in Austria, Poland, Germany and Slovenia. The "old good relationship" between America and the UK might be over. There are a lot of anti-NATO sympathizers in the SNP.

3. A lot of Brits work abroad and work for the EU.

4. Immigration won't stop...but grow! Brits love complaining about eastern europeans like Poles, Romanians. But they WORK. The cause of all the problems with multiculturalism in Britain has nothing to do with Poles, Romanians but with Pakistanis and other middle eastern immigrants. If the number of EU migrants drops...the rise of "commonwealth" migrants will rise...and then I see pompous asian pakistani conservatives who consider themselves "real brits" saying that Indians and Pakistanis were in the british army etc. Well so were the Poles. The forgotten Polish and Lithuanian RAF pilots during ww2.

5. Irish MP Theresa McLaughlin: "They should be carefull what they wish for. Do you really think breaking out of something people dreamed for generations and that has helped many Europeans will change"

6. I am not a right wing extremist but I agree with this PVV MP in Holland: "The British are forgetting their germanic-nordic ancestry and leaning towards asianization of Britain.". Sorry but this is true! We are Germanic, Celtic and we all know it. I would prefer staying together with the Germans and the Danes than with Pakistan and India

I will be voting to stay as I am an overseas voter

The only problematic asians are illegal immigrants (in terms of immigration). Also you're saying white is right, thinly veiling it behind support for Europe. Newsflash a huge chunk of asians come through europe and claim benefits in the uk.

I think the same constraints on legal migrants from the rest of the world should apply to EU migrants. I would rather have a Pakistani Nurse/Doctor/Engineer than a Polish waster. Likewise I would rather a Polish Doctor (do they exist) than a Bengali benefit fraud. I don't want the scum from anywhere in the world in this country regardless of if their white or brown, atm the only way I can see there being a lid put on this is to leave the EU.

Probably will vote to stay though because tbh I don't like change and want to see turkey join the EU:troll:

Remain is leading at the moment.

It will all turn on media narrative one way or the other

However, I still think that the UK is much stronger being in the EU.

The obvious reason for that being that the UK has a huge economy that should be more than capable of funding its own infrastructure projects. That the UK government seems incapable of doing so is not really the EU's fault.
Accidently hit leave - I swear my brain is switched off today. I'm leaning towards stay, but I'm not closed off to idea of leaving - chances are I'll vote to stay though. At the moment I don't feel I know enough to make an informed choice so will probably spend a bit of time doing research at some point to try and get a more balanced view. In terms of arguments for staying, I feel like the EU has a much bigger voice against corporations and multinationals and in that respect a good thing. Also allows us to more easily work on a whole range of issues with other countries. I do however acknowledge Cameron's deal a lot less focussed on this and more focussed on economic benefits of EU and migrant benefits ect. The best argument I've seen to leave has been in regards to how undemocratic the EU is / can be. But overall I'd like to see more research. I feel like the timescale they've given in all honesty is ridiculous and it's like we are making a blind decision - we need more data if we are to make an informed decision.

You know Greece had that austerity referendum? Even someone like me who hates anti-austerity was angry that the EU just said no to it and stopped democracy in process. That's one reason I'd leave.
This whole issue very much confuses me.

Those that say to leave say we'll have better control of our borders, that our economy will be better and we'll be able to get trade deals with other nations easier.

Those that say to stay usually say... we'll negotiate better control of our borders, and that... our economy will be better and we'll be able to trade with other nations more easily?

?????
VOTING TO REMAIN IN
People think leaving will be a nice quick fix to all of our problems. You're all wrong. Countries like Norway and Sweden not in the EU took decades to get where they now are. And this pressing issue of migrant control. Just because we wont be in the EU doesn't stop them from setting the rules. Norway and Sweden receive more immigrants in proportion to their population than Germany! This is because European legislation told them to. The Agricultural sector in the UK will implode. Yes we have foreign quota to fill on production, but the subsidies from the EU far outstrip the negatives they cause. If we leave food prices will rise very quickly. Oil prices will rise very quickly. International relations will be strained if we do. The USA our largest economic partner will struggle to adapt to a non-EU Britain. With Obama even stating it will be a mistake to leave!

Tories = 60% will vote to remain in
Labour = 75% will vote to remain in
Lib Dems = 90% will vote to remain in

It will end up being a split of 60:40 to remain in. Imo.

*like the majority of the other people poll* :"
