Thinking of leaving university, or interrupting my studies or converting..

Ok so I am in my second year of studying Law. I only have three weeks left of teaching and then I am done for this year apart from exams in May. I am seriously considering looking into taking a year out and returning next year to begin my third year and carry on where I left off, or converting so I become a part time student and spreading my last year out over two years. I am in some serious financial trouble but at the minute, even with four days at uni, I just don't have the time to do enough paid work to be able to keep me afloat and at the same time study. I do enjoy my degree to a certain extent but I am lacking motivation and I don't know if that has anything to do with my depression about money situations or what. I have no family who can help me out with my debts, so once my tenancy at my student accommodation this year has ran out I will be moving in with my partner in my hometown which is only about 25 minutes down the road driving. I am thinking I will be working over summer but the wages I get from that will go on living expenses and my debts, but they won't pay even a quarter of them off before I go back in September so what is your advice? Has anyone got any experience of changing from a full to a part time course? If so how does it work, as in hours at uni and timetabling? Any experiences would help if you have any. Thanks guys!

You won't get funding for a part time course. They simply don't provide it. Go to talk to finances at your uni, for clarification over this matter, is my advice!

I think having gotten to the end of second year, dropping out now, if money is your major concern, would be a real shame. Your uni will want to support you. The first thing I would suggest is going to see your student financial support and see if there's any help they can offer you.

The issue with converting to part time is that you won't get a maintenance loan any more, and this might also cause you to lose any bursaries you get from the uni. The other thing is that you'll basically be taking 50% of your modules alongside full time students- so these hours could still be spread across 3-4 days. You wouldn't be able to work a full 9-5 job, but you might be able to do more in the evenings or at weekends as you won't have to spend so much time studying.

If you could pay the debts off if you spent a full year working full time, taking a leave of absence might be the best option- work for a year, pay off your debts, get the maintenance loan for third year and hopefully be able to mostly concentrate on your studies. If you can't, and you'd still be planning to work a lot in third year, I don't think this would be an ideal plan, as third year will be even harder and you may not have the time you want to concentrate on your dissertation.

I commuted about 20-25 minutes to uni by car in third year and it was totally doable. Will you partner be understanding that you'll need to spend X hours a week studying, and that this time can't be used to do housework or for socialising instead?
