Writing a supporting statement for a public sector internship

Hi all,

I have recently been writing up and updating my current resume. However, I found a role that requires me to write a "supporting statement" to be submitted alongside my CV.

I'm unsure as to what exactly this is, I've heard of supporting statements within the context of academia- however, I've never come across the term when referring to a job.

Of course I could be overthinking this, and it could basically just be the cover letter! However, if it was, it would be a cover letter and not a supporting statement.

I've asked advice from others, and they have given me mixed responses from- "its a bit like a personal statement" to its a "cover letter".

The reason I ask is because I am unsure as to how to approach writing it- content and structure.

Anybody lend a hand?

It's a covering letter. Say (in this order) why you want to do this sort of work, why you want to do it with this organisation (ie work in the public sector) and then expand of your three strongest/most relevant skills.
