Paediatric oncologist

i need help on some questions, i am currently studying level 3 health and social care, and would like to do children's nursing in university, but i would like to be a paediatric oncologist, what do i need to do to be able to get there, what qualifications/requirements are needed? From childrens nursing, could i go onto a paediatric oncology course in uni?

A paediatric oncologist is a doctor. There isn't a course for it, you could be a nurse specialising in paediatric cancer. You'd have to go to university for three years to study nursing, then get graduate experience by being a nurse for a few years, then apply for further courses.

That's a course for when you're a qualified nurse, to specialise in oncology as a nurse. To do that course you need to have a nursing degree first, which takes three years at university. An oncologist, cardiologist, neurologist, etc. is a doctor.

The poster above is correct. A paediatric oncologist is a Doctor, not a nurse. The only way to become one is train as a doctor and then as an oncologist (before specialising in paediatrics).

That course would give you more knowledge about cancer in children and how it is managed but it would not qualify you to do things such as diagnosis and treat cancer.

What exactly is it that you understand the role of 'paediatric oncologist' to be? What are you looking for in your future job role?

A-levels, including biology and science, or an access to medicine course. A medical degree. Complete 2 years of foundation training. Complete 2 years of core medical training. Complete oncology training. Looking at at least 17 odd years before you're a consultant.

If it is simply a case of want to care for children with cancer, then complete your level 3 health and social care, plus any other necessary qualifications, apply to do childrens nursing and when you qualify get a job on an oncology ward or in day case chemotherapy unit.

To be a nurse specialising in paediatric oncology, you need to study a children's nursing degree for three years at university, register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a qualified nurse, then work as a nurse for at least a couple of years (prerabably in a paediatric cancer ward/unit) to get onto that postgraduate course. Postgraduate nursing courses require experience of being a qualified practitioner first, and are usually part-time so nurses can work as well as do the course.

To be a paediatric onolocogist, you need to do what ForestCat says.
