University of Roehampton Primary Education BA Students 2018

I just received my offer for Primary Education at Roehampton, I’m super excited as this was my first choice. I thought a thread would be a good place for people on the course to meet other trainees and/or discuss any queries they might have, particularly those who are out of area and might not be able to make it to Offer Holder days.

As I am out of the catchment area I would be staying on campus rather than commuting to Uni, so I was wondering who else would be in the same situation and what accommodation they would be looking at?

It really depends on what campus you prefer, how much you can get in loans and who you would like to be housemates with. I personally would prefer to be on the Froebel campus as its closer to the education block and slightly removed from the busier Digby campus, so it is a little bit quieter. However, the library is located on the other side of the campus (nearer the Elm Grove Hall accommodation) and so it would require a five to ten-minute walk from a lot of the Froebel accommodation.

I’m looking at the medium price accommodation, even though I get loans that could cover the more expensive Digby lodgings, because it means a smaller student loan and interest at the end of my course. I was also suggested to not spend a lot of loans on accommodation by a member of staff on the offer holder day, as they said you don’t really spend that much time in your room as you’re either in lectures, studying, working or just out and about!

Froebel may seem a bit removed from the buzz of the Digby campus and the services near it (the Hive and canteen) but I’m pretty sure the SU and where they hold the Bops are actually nearer to Froebel, so I wouldn’t worry about feeling isolated, despite the location of the campus accommodation. Additionally, if you lodge on the education campus are more likely to be staying with people on the same course; from what I can gather Froebel tends to mostly house education, psychology and dance students. However, I do know Primary Ed students who are staying in the Digby accommodation should you prefer it!

I’m planning on doing either sociology or primary teaching but I’d prefer a busier campus as I’m fairly sociable, stuck between Whitelands and digby

I would suggest looking into where your lectures would be held and looking for accommodation nearby, depending on where sociology is held, I would suggest Digby over Whiteland’s. It’s near the library and should you end up doing Primary Education its still closer than the Whiteland’s College which I believe is a short walk down the road from all the other interconnecting campuses of Southlands, Digby Stuart and Froebel.

Places like the Hive and the SU are all located on the Southlands, Digby Stuart and Froebel campus, so if you’re looking for a more social atmosphere I would recommend accommodation there. Additionally, there’s a lake and lawn area where students go during the hotter weather which provides a strong social/community feeling. However, if sociology is on the Whiteland’s campus, don’t worry about the social aspect as there are regular activities and groups that mean you’ll always have someone to socialise with!

However, before you decide on accommodation I would make sure you know on which campus your selected course is going to be held. Also, I know you’re on the fence about what course to choose but be aware that to enter the Primary Ed course you need to have completed Skills Tests, so if you choose the course over sociology make sure you don’t leave it too late to complete them, as you can’t start the course without them!

I’ve just finished my first year of BA Primary Education and I lived on Froebel. I think for any education or dance degree Froebel is better as you’re literally a 30 second walk to where your lectures/seminars are held. Plus you’re the same distance away from the bar which is also a perk! On the nights out that the university organise (monday, wednesday and friday) the university provides transportation to and from the clubs and the buses leave from froebel campus too. So really although it’s a smaller campus, it’s very sociable and the grounds are beautiful. There’s the lawn and the lake, and you become really close to the people you’re living with and the accommodation blocks surrounding you too as you see the people who live there the time. The library is on digby stuart campus, which is only a 5/10 minute walk away!
