Unis are going to ban freshers from having parties and overnight visitors

If going to freshers matters to you more than getting yourself killed, or getting anyone else you make contact with killed, you seriously need to re-evaluate. It CANT be worth it, to get people killed so that you can get drunk and forget the whole night. Stay home.

Why are you anon?

Or to the pub.

IF we have a vaccine and IF it's handed out to the general public.

Agreed. It might not be safe for a long time, but that’s no excuse to be reckless now.

Or to the pub. Better off just staying at home.

IF we have a vaccine and IF it's handed out to the general public.

Doubt there will be a vaccine

Yes don't know why anyone would bother living in halls. Just stay at home where there will be no exposure.

Yeah probably not but whatever helps people sleep at night.

Hah - because I hate getting dumb private messages from people with no morality. :/ got too frustrated so anything potentially controversial I just post anon now.

Lol not everyone lives near to a half-decent university unfortunately :/
Certainly a good idea for those who can, though.

Realistically though, UCL's measures won't stop you from meeting people outside of student halls premises. They can't. It's not their jurisdiction.

Realistically, at best, it will stop people having as many one-night stands as they'd like to. I don't know what UCL accommodation is like. Unless they have receptionists or doormen at every entrance, someone is going to have to sit and review hundreds, maybe thousands of hours of CCTV footage per week to identify students breaking social distancing rules. They won't bother, but the idea of this will deter some of the more paranoid students I suppose. At least initially.

So the fact this would convince some students to defer an whole year... just makes me facepalm.

Sure, yeah, it’s gonna be impossible to force students to social distance everywhere.
But the LEAST universities can do is to say that they won’t allow for any unsafe, non-social-distanced events to take place on campus, or to be run through the student union.

It obviously won’t stop students from being reckless on their own time, but it would definitely cut back on the people attending those events, and make it clear to students that the university isn’t just going to let them do whatever.

I mean if people are really going to defer just because they’ll be no freshers or clubbing, then good! They should! It’s clearly not the year for them to go, they can wait until it’s safe. That would mean that the people actually at university in September are those who aren’t just there to party.

Yeah but I mean if you're choosing to live in student accommodation (which is filthy in good times) you'd probably have to expect that you'll live with flatmates who may choose to socialise in such a way (let's face it, university halls aren't well known for considerate residents). Better off deferring/reapplying to next year when covid-19 will have disappeared and staying at home where it's safe.
They just want to control you all the time.

Most of the parties I went to at university had nothing to do with the university or union, and if they were society events, we didn't let the union know anything about it. The people who want to party will party if they want to. Also, you can go to university to socialise and study, it is possible.

I guess, if you can, yeah. Private accommodation is more expensive though and I for one can’t afford it this year. I also doubt they’ll let many people defer since so many will want to. At some uni’s it was hard to get them to let you defer BEFORE covid, it’s only going to be harder now.
I expect they’ll allow it for immunocompromised people, but they won’t be giving them to anyone who asks that for sure.
I desperately don’t want to have to reapply next year, I’ve already gone through the application process twice :frown:

Bet get used to the prospect of people doing what they want in halls then.

Of course you can go to uni to study and socialise, I think that’s the goal for most people, is it not?
I’m just saying anyone who’s just going to uni for the hell of it, who doesn’t really care about the course, and is only there for the general ‘experience’ and the clubbing and crap - They should probably wait until next year at least.

I’m not expecting every damn social event to be cancelled, I just think there should be measures put in place to stop big crowds like at clubs and parties. It IS possible to socialise without flashing lights and bad music, after all. And for people who want to form genuine connections, it’s a lot easier to do when you can actually hear each other, anyway. :P

Wow, yeah, I’m so excited. Can’t wait to hole myself up in my room with my face mask and disinfectant lol

Of course. That being said, I didn't go to clubs to form connections. I went with people I was already 'connected' to

Yeah that’s fair enough. It’s not the only way to hang out with mates, is what I mean.
I don’t doubt that we’ll be missing out on certain social aspects with no clubbing, but I wish people wouldn’t act like it is such an essential part of being a student.
You can do plenty of other things - things where you can social-distance!

Brave enough?
Which unis have said things will be normal?

Anyone with a brain realises there is a virus and social distancing will be in place.
Ivernight guests arent compatible with that and staying in your own bubble is.

Though OP is naive....

Do you truly believe that students are going to be contained in some bubble... What happens when they use London public transport. 😅😂. Uni's need to lighten up. If they don't feel it's safe... They should cancel accomodation and risk losing the revenue not imprison people and diminish their freedoms to unreasonable and unrealistic levels, while collecting those revenue streams quite willingly!

This is the thing, young people are so ignorant. If you’re perfectly healthy and you go to the party, and what - you catch it but your symptoms aren’t bad, or you’re asymptomatic, good for you. Then you go back to your flat and pass it to your flatmates - the ones who’ve deliberately avoided going to parties and **** because of the risk. The ones who physically CANNOT social distance from you in your cramped uni accommodation.
So if one of them gets it from you, and then they die, or they get permanent lung damage, or any of the other potentially debilitating things that could happen given there’s so much we don’t know about this virus.
How the hell are you gonna feel knowing you got them killed, hurt, hospitalised. Not everyone is gonna survive this, the least you can do is not spread it. You go to parties and you bring it home, you’re taking away your flatmates ability to stay safe.
It’s not a ‘nono’, it’s seriously going to kill people.
I am literally begging anyone reading this, if you’re in a shared flat, do NOT go to parties, or clubbing. Go next year when we have a vaccine.

Yes that's true, but if someone is particularly prone to the effects of covid they would most likely defer, i know plenty of people who are doing that. As well as that, as long as you wash your hands and stick to strict routines, then you have less of a chance of catching the virus.
Its also worth noting that we are past our peak and the NHS is not overwhelmed and our death rate is significantly decreasing.

It's because more prospective first years don't have a clue about much. It's not an essential part of being a student, but it can be fun. The misery-guts are just as bad as the people who think clubbing is the centre of life.
