Law Entry Requirements

Hello, I am considering applying to Exeter for Law. My predicted grades are BBB and I am eligible for the contextual offer, which I have read as BBB. Are my predicted grades okay to apply with or would I have to try and get them bumped up to even stand a chance. I do have internal assessments next week which may help persuade at least one of my teachers to increase my grade from a B to an A. Thank you in advance.

Hi. Obviously the nearer your grades to our grade requirements the better but you must note that these are only predictions and so you will still have to get those grades in the Summer. Law is one of our popular courses and it is competitive but, if you qualify for the contextual offer as you say, our Admissions team will apply that criteria when considering your application.
As an aside, have you looked at our Law courses at the Penryn Campus? We offer LLB Law with Business there and the standard offer is slightly lower at AAB-ABB. This is a qualifying law degree with the bonus of offering business and commercial awareness skills too. Thank you for the response, is there any difference in "prestige" between the LLB Law at the Streatham Campus and the one at the Penryn Campus? Not to sound arrogant or snobbish, I just want to give myself the best possible chance of getting a desirable job after uni. If it is minimal I will most likely consider the LLB Law with Business over the standard LLB Law degree.

I sent my application off for LLB Law on the 7th of October 2020 with the predicted grades of AAB and A* in EPQ and I still haven’t heard anything back. This is very nerve wrecking as I’ve seen threads where people heard back like the next day. I thought I fit the categories for the contextual offer of BBB but I don’t think that’s relevant anymore which has made me even more anxious . Has anyone else heard back and what was your offer if you don’t mind sharing.

From someone who has spent time working in the legal industry in the city, I can confirm that straight law is much more prestigious than the law and business option. Even if you are thinking about pursuing a career in corp/commercial law, employers would prefer the single honours LLB option at Streatham. The reason for this is that the Streatham LLB option gives students a more rounded and intense view of different areas of law - you could say these are perceived as being slightly more difficult compared to the business options at Penryn. You are not expected to specialise in one area until after you've completed the training contract stage anyway. If you want to understand why the law and business option is less prestigious then just look at the course content of the modules offered in the law and business course. There are a lot of 'soft' courses such as Social Enterprise Management, Workplace Wellbeing and Digital Technologies and the Future of Work. These are the types of courses that you would find in an easier business studies degree. Also remember, you can still do corporate and commercial law as options in the Streatham LLB.

Well Exeter has a list of schools that they offer a contextual offer to because of the amount of kids who live in a deprived area. I’m pretty certain that my school was on there but It’s not on there anymore therefore not making me eligible for the contextual offer.

Oh right, have you checked if your postcode makes you eligible? That’s the reason I am eligible.

Yes I have checked and it isn’t covered. Have you heard back from them yet? They seem to be taking an awfully long time.

I haven’t actually sent my application off yet, my LNAT is this Saturday so i’ll make my final decisions after I gauge how well I think I did but I did manage to get my predicted grades up to AAB so I think i’ll stand a better chance now. Also don’t worry about waiting for replies, I have read that it can take up to April for them to reply.

Well good luck on your LNAT and hopefully it goes well. Mine was booked for October but it got pushed back to January now so I have to wait. I applied to Nottingham as well and now I have to wait until I’ve done it to get an offer.
