Law Entry Requirements

Hello, I am considering applying to Exeter for Law. My predicted grades are BBB and I am eligible for the contextual offer, which I have read as BBB. Are my predicted grades okay to apply with or would I have to try and get them bumped up to even stand a chance. I do have internal assessments next week which may help persuade at least one of my teachers to increase my grade from a B to an A. Thank you in advance.

I'm in a similar position, I am applying to do law at uni of Leeds but my predicted grades are BBB. You can ask your teacher to put any grades, so if you want AAA for example you can ask them to put this. If your personal statement is good you may still get an offer, I'm still applying to Leeds but also some universities with lower grades. There is definitely still a chance that you can get a place, but it's less likely than if your predicted grades were higher.

Hi. Obviously the nearer your grades to our grade requirements the better but you must note that these are only predictions and so you will still have to get those grades in the Summer. Law is one of our popular courses and it is competitive but, if you qualify for the contextual offer as you say, our Admissions team will apply that criteria when considering your application.
As an aside, have you looked at our Law courses at the Penryn Campus? We offer LLB Law with Business there and the standard offer is slightly lower at AAB-ABB. This is a qualifying law degree with the bonus of offering business and commercial awareness skills too. For more information, you can chat with Patricia - one of our Unibuddies - who studies this course here https://www.exeter.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/law/lawbusiness/#entry-requirements
Hope that this helps

Thank you for the response, is there any difference in "prestige" between the LLB Law at the Streatham Campus and the one at the Penryn Campus? Not to sound arrogant or snobbish, I just want to give myself the best possible chance of getting a desirable job after uni. If it is minimal I will most likely consider the LLB Law with Business over the standard LLB Law degree.
Thanks again!

Hi. Both courses are University of Exeter awarded degrees and, as they are also LLB qualifying degrees, a large part of the course content is predetermined by external organisations that set national standards at all universities. As an Exeter student you will have equal access to the University's contacts in the legal field - which are very good - and opportunities for work placements etc.
The main difference is that with the Penryn programme students are also part of the Business School and the specialist area of study is towards business and corporate law. So if you are leaning towards working in the corporate sector, the Penryn course would give you an understanding of business that other students may not have.
As with most things, it is a matter of what a student does with their degree and the opportunities they take that has the most effect. So it is always better to choose a degree course that interests and excites you. You will enjoy it more and probably do better in the long run.
Hope that this helps - it is difficult to answer the 'prestige' question directly as that term is so indefinite.

Hi,
I sent my application off for LLB Law on the 7th of October 2020 with the predicted grades of AAB and A* in EPQ and I still haven’t heard anything back. This is very nerve wrecking as I’ve seen threads where people heard back like the next day. I thought I fit the categories for the contextual offer of BBB but I don’t think that’s relevant anymore which has made me even more anxious . Has anyone else heard back and what was your offer if you don’t mind sharing.

I haven’t actually sent my application off yet but what do you mean the BBB offer isn’t relevant anymore?

From someone who has spent time working in the legal industry in the city, I can confirm that straight law is much more prestigious than the law and business option. Even if you are thinking about pursuing a career in corp/commercial law, employers would prefer the single honours LLB option at Streatham. The reason for this is that the Streatham LLB option gives students a more rounded and intense view of different areas of law - you could say these are perceived as being slightly more difficult compared to the business options at Penryn. You are not expected to specialise in one area until after you've completed the training contract stage anyway. If you want to understand why the law and business option is less prestigious then just look at the course content of the modules offered in the law and business course. There are a lot of 'soft' courses such as Social Enterprise Management, Workplace Wellbeing and Digital Technologies and the Future of Work. These are the types of courses that you would find in an easier business studies degree. Also remember, you can still do corporate and commercial law as options in the Streatham LLB.

This is very helpful, thanks for the clarification.

Well Exeter has a list of schools that they offer a contextual offer to because of the amount of kids who live in a deprived area. I’m pretty certain that my school was on there but It’s not on there anymore therefore not making me eligible for the contextual offer.

Oh right, have you checked if your postcode makes you eligible? That’s the reason I am eligible.

Yes I have checked and it isn’t covered. Have you heard back from them yet? They seem to be taking an awfully long time.

I haven’t actually sent my application off yet, my LNAT is this Saturday so i’ll make my final decisions after I gauge how well I think I did but I did manage to get my predicted grades up to AAB so I think i’ll stand a better chance now. Also don’t worry about waiting for replies, I have read that it can take up to April for them to reply.

Well good luck on your LNAT and hopefully it goes well. Mine was booked for October but it got pushed back to January now so I have to wait. I applied to Nottingham as well and now I have to wait until I’ve done it to get an offer.

Hi @Curious G

The way we make offers varies from programme to programme. In some situation we operate a gathered field approach where we wait until 15th January and make offers once we have received all the applications. For other programmes we begin to make offers as we receive application, though this can sometimes be only for students who have achieved particular predicted grades, with their students having to wait a little longer.

Details about the eligibility for our contextual offer can be found here. We have included a list of the eligible schools and it is possible to check your postcode to see whether you would meet the conditions for a contextual offer.

If you have any questions about the status of your application, I recommend speaking to our Admission team directly; you can use our contact form or call them on 0300 555 60. If you have received your acknowledgement email it should all be fine thought and unfortunately the only advise I can give is to continue to wait patiently (I know that is hard though as you just want to know).

Good luck and I hope it is not too long a wait before you hear back. Do let me know if you have any questions that I can help you with.

- Update

I just received an offer from Exeter for Law and I previously received an offer for Law with Business at the Penryn Campus. (Both BBB offers)

I've applied to Nottingham and Exeter too, I'm still waiting for offers from both of these - I've got my final grades which are A*AB, but I'm not doing my LNAT for Nottingham until the 15th

I'm really hoping that my A* will balance out my B and I'll get an offer!

Good luck to everyone applying!!:h:
