It's common for AUDITIONS but not interviews.
Ask if they have any hardship schemes for applicants who can't afford the fee.

ah they are calling it an interview/audition. why is that though? I can afford it i just thought it was strange, combined with other weird things they've done it's putting me off

It's supposed to put off timewasters for performing arts degrees (and it's a way course providers can pretend they're similar to conservatoires)
