How to get out of bed in the morning on the weekend (a serious issue veiled under a t

Hi r/productivity,

I am currently suffering from a problem that seems minor but is quite significant to me. I simply cannot get out of bed in the morning at a reasonable time, on a day I do not have work (usually the weekend).

To explain, I see this as a problem because it wastes a large portion of my day. Ideally, I would like to get up at 9 or 9:30am at the latest, but I find myself staying in bed and getting up usually at 12pm. It causes me a lot of stress and regret.

For further context, right now I am in the middle of my country’s winter, so it is quite cold. My room also does not have any sunlight in the morning.

For a specific example, on a weekend day, I woke up at 10am. This was fine; not too late to make the most out of the day. However, when shutting off the alarm on my phone across the room from my bed, I found myself unable to get out of my room. The heater was turned on, eliminating the coldness, but I still did not want to get up. I returned to bed, going under the blankets and regretting my decision. Finally, it got to the point where I just grabbed my phone and scrolled on it, stuck between a melancholic indecision of being unable to get out of bed but craving some stimulus. I then spent around 30 minutes scrolling on Facebook, watching youtube clips and then finally well… doing the deed to porn. Needless to say, I regretted my decision soon after.

Now, this isn’t even the worst of it. I sometimes spend 3 hours on my phone at a time in bed.

I hypothesise the root cause of my issue to be a desire to just lie in a comfortable spot and delay action as much as possible, possibly as a form of procrastination. A stupid but maybe valid thought I had is maybe it’s to even procrastinate brushing my teeth, which is very painful for me as it takes too long. As for strategies I have tried to fix this, these include:

- Moving my phone away from my bed.

- Having a set deadline to get out of bed.

- Moving to another, less comfortable bed.

- Turning on the heater to eliminate the factor of being cold.

The results of these however, have been:

- Not very useful. I simply just stay in bed for the same amount of time, however not having the phone helps to relieve some stress (but is also impractical because there is now no alarm).

- Very effective. However, this can only come about through work on weekdays. Right now I am recovering from a medical operation, so I cannot create any deadlines to get out of bed.

- Have tried this, but the same result. I simply just want to stay in a comfortable spot.

- Turning on the heater does help, but I suspect does not eliminate the root cause of the issue, which is my desire to just stay in a comfortable spot.

The very last resort I am thinking of is sleeping in a sleeping bag, as perhaps my bed (or any bed) has become too comfortable for me. Another strategy is getting an electric toothbrush, as I suspect maybe it is procrastination from the pain of brushing my teeth manually.

Any feedback/help from people who have experienced this would be much appreciated. I know this seems quite stupid so ridicule is expected, but for those who have genuine advice, thanks so much!
I also have trouble getting up in the mornings, and motivating myself to do things. What I have found helpful is guilting myself about my lack of productivity, ie: other people who have the same dream as me are working right now while I am on my phone in bed. I've also put pictures up around my room of my dream life and made Pinterest boards, so I can remember what I'm working towards.

I know in winter it's especially hard, but I usually count down from 10 to 1 then force myself to jump quickly out of bed, do some stretches, drink a glass of water and wash my face straight away, then think about what I want to accomplish that day.
These are what work for me, hope this helps!
Can you join something like a class of some kind that would force you to get up (could be an online one if that is easier)?

Thanks for the words of wisdom! Honestly, I don't think I'm the type of person where guilting myself and forcing myself to get up would work :frown:. I've found direct strategies work best for me that don't rely on willpower, such as just moving my phone away from my room. But anyway thanks for the help and let me know if you have any further thoughts!

You deserve a bit of a rest on days you're not working
Could be a deeper issue eg anxiety, not knowing what to do with yourself for such long periods
Sometimes too much choice can trigger anxiety

That's a great idea - an online class probably wouldn't work unless it's one where attendance is crucial. However, I did join a volleyball class but it starts at 12pm so it's a bit too late for it to work (a 10am one I did a while back did however).

But alas, I have to stay at home to recover so no physical classes is possible unfortunately. Online classes also don't seem realistic unless there is a big comittment to them. My ultimate goal is to just wake up even if nothing is on like a class.

Sorry I know I sound really whiny and bratty but these are my honest thoughts and I have tried all them before! Any further thoughts would be much appreciated if you have them!

Thanks for your replies everyone! Last night I tried to just sleep in a sleeping bag, and it worked reasonably well for me to get up at 9:30. Will see if it's a viable alternative in the future on weekends.

Jeez man I have to get the Hoover out. Wash up. Move furniture around. Anything from stamping on my razor and getting the blade.

@WazzWazz98 I do have anxiety but am taking medication for it. You do raise a good point, but I have no desire to wake up anywhere near I do when working (usually 6 or 7), but simply max 9:30.

I do appreciate your insight though, but I feel it is best if I try to find a solution to this.
@wazza778 sorry what do you mean?

Could it simply be your meds making you feel lethargic? How long have you been taking them ?

Do you have he same bedtime routine on weekends as you do on weekdays (as in, do you go to bed at the same time)? Training your body into always getting up at the same time may help.
@black tea I don't have the same routine - I sleep fairly early on weekdays (10 or 11) and wake up early (6 or 7) for work.

Honestly, I've tried this strategy before but it's never worked out for me because if there's no obligation, my body extremely dislikes getting up that early.
It might help to get an alarm clock that is separate from your phone. I have one that also has a sunrise light, which tells my body when I am asleep that it is nearly time to wake up. This in tandem with your heater might help prepare your body for getting up.

Low mood can be a factor to staying in bed, but helping keep a routine really helps battle this, even if you don't want to. Things like medical operations (as you mentioned you are recovering from) can also be a trigger for low mood. Maybe it would help if you prepared some breakfast the night before that you'd look forward to getting up for, and don't have to put effort into preparing. Or buying some nice tea or coffee that you'd want to get up for. Also, don't underestimate that your body might just need the extra rest after your operation.
