Hi r/productivity,
I am currently suffering from a problem that seems minor but is quite significant to me. I simply cannot get out of bed in the morning at a reasonable time, on a day I do not have work (usually the weekend).
To explain, I see this as a problem because it wastes a large portion of my day. Ideally, I would like to get up at 9 or 9:30am at the latest, but I find myself staying in bed and getting up usually at 12pm. It causes me a lot of stress and regret.
For further context, right now I am in the middle of my country’s winter, so it is quite cold. My room also does not have any sunlight in the morning.
For a specific example, on a weekend day, I woke up at 10am. This was fine; not too late to make the most out of the day. However, when shutting off the alarm on my phone across the room from my bed, I found myself unable to get out of my room. The heater was turned on, eliminating the coldness, but I still did not want to get up. I returned to bed, going under the blankets and regretting my decision. Finally, it got to the point where I just grabbed my phone and scrolled on it, stuck between a melancholic indecision of being unable to get out of bed but craving some stimulus. I then spent around 30 minutes scrolling on Facebook, watching youtube clips and then finally well… doing the deed to porn. Needless to say, I regretted my decision soon after.
Now, this isn’t even the worst of it. I sometimes spend 3 hours on my phone at a time in bed.
I hypothesise the root cause of my issue to be a desire to just lie in a comfortable spot and delay action as much as possible, possibly as a form of procrastination. A stupid but maybe valid thought I had is maybe it’s to even procrastinate brushing my teeth, which is very painful for me as it takes too long. As for strategies I have tried to fix this, these include:
- Moving my phone away from my bed.
- Having a set deadline to get out of bed.
- Moving to another, less comfortable bed.
- Turning on the heater to eliminate the factor of being cold.
The results of these however, have been:
- Not very useful. I simply just stay in bed for the same amount of time, however not having the phone helps to relieve some stress (but is also impractical because there is now no alarm).
- Very effective. However, this can only come about through work on weekdays. Right now I am recovering from a medical operation, so I cannot create any deadlines to get out of bed.
- Have tried this, but the same result. I simply just want to stay in a comfortable spot.
- Turning on the heater does help, but I suspect does not eliminate the root cause of the issue, which is my desire to just stay in a comfortable spot.
The very last resort I am thinking of is sleeping in a sleeping bag, as perhaps my bed (or any bed) has become too comfortable for me. Another strategy is getting an electric toothbrush, as I suspect maybe it is procrastination from the pain of brushing my teeth manually.
Any feedback/help from people who have experienced this would be much appreciated. I know this seems quite stupid so ridicule is expected, but for those who have genuine advice, thanks so much!
