There's a sort of guide to the course on the Cam site, it's a pdf, and each part has suggested background reading if this helps at all...

Apart from that, I'm no SPSer, but I imagine you should probably just read things that interest you, read a 'proper' newspaper regularly, and really think about whatever you read, I suppose.
