I used to think it was tacky, especially during the chav era last decade. But since we've entered the hipster era, which disproves of 'lol', I find it really cute when my friends put lol in their texts.

I don't really think anything of it. It got a bit much during the msn crazy days when people just used to say it when they couldn't think of anything else, but nowadays I don't mind.
