erm what is a freshers fair actually like? Did you go alone

at my uni it was just a big room with loads of stalls. Have you ever had a careers fair? Or unis coming in to talk to you? It's basically like that. Just loads of stalls with info and stuff. I went with one of my flatmates (maybe 2? idk) but the next one I'm (probably) going to alone.
I would say that it really depends on your uni and halls. In mine, there was no real communal area to socialise in (the kitchen was tiny, about the size of your average cleaner's cupboard with no seating area/ space for more than two people max; the bar is super quiet and never really open; the JCR has some kinda comfy sofas but is the size of the average living room but shared by the entire college so no space there either...) so no-one really socialised much in college. I think the crowd who liked partying and clubbing went out during freshers and did pre-drinks in each others' rooms so got to know each other well that way. I only really got to know people through societies and my subject. Freshers week is too short really to get to know anyone anyway - we spent the first day unpacking, the next attending talks about the uni and meeting tutors etc., the next having a tour of our lecture halls and collecting stuff like lab coats from the Chemistry department and visiting the Freshers' Fair, and the next day lectures started :frown:

oh is that what first week is like
It doesn't hurt to try and be a little chatty.
I'm an introvert myself; God knows I get exhausted after being around people for a while and need to retreat back to my room and be by myself.
Luckily for me, I had around 52 people on my floor (accommodation issues for term one) so whenever I set foot into the kitchen, there'd be someone there to say hi to.

You don't need to be an extrovert OR chatty to make friends with people living in your hall. Basic questions usually get things going.

Definitely go to Freshers' Fair and sign up for societies. If you have Facebook, there are usually 'firmer' group pages where you get to know people; it's how I got to know my friends. Once you do that, you can sign up/attend the same Freshers' events.

You mentioned drinking - can I just say, that as a non-drinker, it's a little difficult enjoying yourself at clubs. But if you're with fun people, it's enjoyable.
Plus, there's always alternative options to nights out in town. Really depends on your university and the freshers' timetable they make!

As an introvert, I guess I had a different kind of a freshers' week but it was great, nonetheless. :ahee:

What is it like for people who don't live in halls ? Got rejected from uni halls so have to get a flat with only a few students who probably go to different unis.

My friend moved into a house with friends from home instead of halls because she applied so late. She still managed to make a bunch of friends, but she just had to make more of an effort with making friends on her course and meeting people through people on her course.

I was the opposite, made all of my friends through my accommodation and through people in my accommodation and failed to make friends on my course.
