What is freshers week?

Like eventa and stuff in uni, what does it involve and stuff and is it a place i should go?
A week where people spend a load of money to get drunk with people they probably won't speak again to for the remaining 3 years, get flu and get meningitis vaccinations.

It is basically the introduction week at university. There will be lots of events and you can choose which ones you want. In the day time there will be things like society tasters (e.g. sports and other things) and there will be a freshers fair where all the societies go. Its very helpful. There will be lots of information about university resources, where to get help when struggling etc. I would strongly recommend going to events like that.

There may also be events in you building blocks or areas depending on your university and how they do accommodation.

In the evening it is basically a big party. There are bar crawls live music etc.

Hello,

Yes definitely worth having a look. You will get a good idea about the different activities you could get involved in whilst at uni. To add to other replies, local businesses such as gyms and restaurants might also have a stall at fresher's week. Great way to learn about going out places around town in your first week of uni.

Kind regards,

Leaving aside the social part, it will also include some mandatory administrative things -- like an in-person registration session which will include things like picking up your student/ID/library card. That in-person registration is what needs to happen for the university to confirm to the student loans people that you're in attendance, and that's what will trigger the payment of your maintenance loan.

If you don't register with the university you'll need to arrange to do that separately, and if you don't then ultimately (you'll probably get a couple of reminders) the university will deem you a "no-show" and remove you from the course.

Hey there!

Night-out wise, freshers week is pretty much the first week everyone moves in and most people end up going out for the majority of the week. There is still loads of people who don't go out so if you don't enjoy that sort of thing then don't feel pressured into doing it. Events companies will likely set up events for every night of the week where there will be student drinks prices and deals. They may also offer wristbands for the week which is access to every one of their events for a reduced price. My advice is to not buy any tickets until you've found your flatmates because you'll probably end up going out with them and you don't want to end up with completely different tickets to what they've bought. Your student union may also host events during freshers week to socialise and meet new people.

University-wise, there may be timetabled sessions to be introduced to your coursemates and meet your lecturers. These are optional but I would advise going as it's a great chance to introduce yourself to new people. There will also be different events going on such as the societies and sports societies fairs if you want to join one of those. Keep your eyes peeled on your university's website for more information on how to book onto these. My university also had a freebees fair which is exactly what it says in the name, you go and get free stuff pretty much. You did have to book onto this and there was large queues but ultimately it was worth it. Pretty much just keep checking your university's website.

Hope this helped!

Freshers will allow you to join clubs, societies, etc.
Your course will also run introductions to staff welcome meetings.
Any reasonable sized campus takes a while to learn to navigate.

Many courses do not take place in one building. Example is Warwick which is 700 odd acres.
On average you have ten mins between lecture slots.
While some leeway is given for late arrivals you need to find your way to everything from SU to admin, lecture halls and departments.

You make friends in freshers, you may become best mates or even sleep with some, learn to hate others and join a random society that is a passing interest or becomes a lifelong passion.
There are booze filled events, religious societies, “cool/uncool” activities but it is a finding your feet week that you will miss out on if you don’t attend.

Fresher's week is a week, usually before first term and after arrival week, where universities focus on the new students coming in after their A levels or gap years etc. Lots of events are held--bar events, student's union run events, uni run events, fresher's fair, markets etc.-- to really make fresher's feel at home in their university town. Often a lot of students are also helping out as guides or at the events themselves, making sure people don't get lost or uncomfortable. It's a week about solidifying your place at university and finding who you click with and what works for you as a student living away from home.

I think it is an absolutely great opportunity for any fresher to attend at least some of the events going on because it's a great way to connect with people who are also in that situation--first time away from home. It makes it easier to settle in and makes uni feel less daunting to a lot of people when they can spend a week having fun, finding socities, drinking if that's what you're into etc. It's not one singular place it's a bunch of places coordinated by many different teams from the university and I would definitely say to go.

Hope this helps,
Dom

Hi!
Freshers week is a great way to meet people and get involved with activities you may have never tried before. There will be loads going on, of course some of this will surround drinking and clubbing but in my experience there were many other activities too. There will also be a freshers fair where businesses will be giving out free stuff and you will be able to see what societies are available to you. You will likely be given a timetable for all the activities and events on offer.
Hope this helps, Faye

Freshers week is essentially the introduction to uni. There is usually a freshers fair where you can get to know about businesses and places in the local area as well as all of the societies. There is often lots of freebies to get including water bottles, sometimes T shirts etc.
There are often themed nights out as well which are always fun. I would definitely recommend getting involved, it is a good way to meet people.

I hope this helps,

Hi there,

Freshers week is basically a week full of fun events to help welcome students to the university and allow them to meet new friends. The fresher's fair is where you will be able to join societies and discover local businesses where I'm sure you will find some free stuff too. If you are living in halls freshers week is a great way for you to get to know your flat mates better and even find friends who will be studying on your course.

All the best,
Sarah

Hello,

I’m a BA Dance student from the University of Lincoln and you should be super excited for freshers week. I am going into my second year of university and I remember feeling really anxious about freshers week in my first year… and didn’t really know what to expect. But let me tell you…. There is something for everyone
It is a whole week of events during both the day and the night. It is an opportunity to find new friends, societies and find out how you want to spend your time at university alongside your course. Your university may offer a freshers fair which is loads of fun! - local and national companies will be promoting their businesses from gyms, sports clubs, piercing clinics, restaurants , shops and many more… plus loads of free goodies!
Freshers will also include lots of activities at night whether this is bar crawls, competitions or exclusive club events- if this is for you that’s great! …. If not there is no pressure to attend any of them… there is loads of different activities you can take part in that best suit your interest
Additionally, depending on your course you may have some small intro lectures/ classes to attend to get you started on your learning so keep an eye out for those!

I hope this offers some insight and I know you’ll have a fantastic time!

Hi there

Freshers week is a week where many events are hosted to welcome new students to the University and help them get settled down.

There will be a freshers fair where you can join societies that interest you and meet new people. University is a really good place and time to develop new interests and hobbies, so I would definetely recommend having a look around~

On top of that, local shops and businesses may also come on site, so you can get a good idea of what is in your environment.

I hope that helps

Hi there,

Freshers week is the first week when you come to university. It is filled with events in both the day and night, designed to introduce you to student life. There is also usually a fresher fair to introduce you to all the societies on offer!

It is usually a really fun week but is very heavy in nightlife (be aware of freshers' flu) but it's a great time to meet people and settle into uni life before your work starts.

All the best:smile:

Freshers or Welcome Week is your first week of term that consists of welcome talks, registration and social events. The aim is to get you immersed in student life and familiar with the campus. You'll have a timetable for the week and be expected to attend taster events and seminars, there will also be a range of events hosted by the SU. Not everything is centered around drinking, more so different opportunities to socialise and interact with your fellow first years. Lecturers then start the week after when 2nd and 3rd years also return.

Hi @MVitalis

You should receive an email from the university soon telling you when to move into your accommodation. This will usually be during the weekend before freshers week. To find out what events are on, it's probably easiest to look on the official social media pages for your college/university, as they will often publish a fresher's timetable beforehand, or you can get in contact with them on the student room/on social media if you can't find one. When you first move in, you and your flatmates will probably also be handed a physical copy of the timetable. Hope this helps!
