please help with ecology simpson index

I have an ecology assignment on pond plant samples. The individual species are recorded using the domin scale, which as i understand it, the domin scale is a scale based on percentage cover.

I'm wondering whether anyone knows if I can use simpsons index based on percentage cover of species?

I've used simpsons before but only based on individual species recorded not percentage of species recorded.

Does anyone know if i can use the index based on percentage (domin-scale)?

Any advise greatly appreciated, thanks.
