What? A £10,000 car insure on a Golf GTI 1997 for a 18 year old?!

Wow. I've been to many sites that compare car insure quotes for many providers and I just realised that they charge a LOT more for an older car. Why is that?

I'm not 18 yet, lol. But I'm just planning for the future you see. Here's a picture - http://prntscr.com/9hkf18

I selected "Undergraduate Student - Living at Home" when they ask about what you do. Can someone give me tips? I really like the classic Golfs, and I want to buy one soon but the insurance is so expensive..

Because they are more prone to accidents/repairs/servicing.
Try getting mum/dad to add it and you to a multi car policy?

And theft... Insurance dont cover servicing/non accident repair.
It's a GTI
Compare it to a standard golf of the same era.
You are. Almost into collective territory so spares and repairs are likely to be costly.

GTI 's were easy to steal and got wrapped around lampposts every week

Because it's a GTI for an 18 year old. Either get a tiny engine, or a more unusual car for a young driver.

Then what kind of Golf should I get then? I don't want to get any other car than a VW Golf for sure.

Thanks! But I actually prefer hatchbacks. I don't like any other body types.

How on earth can you really be that surprised that a 2.0l hot hatch would cost you so much on insurance?
Statistically you're likely to write it off.

How about, use that brain of yours and get a 1.0l VW Lupo or some other cheap used 1.0l-1.2l alterative for a number of years, to bring up your NCB. Once you have a number of years NCB under your belt that quotation will drop dramatically.
If you want a golf then it most certainly will have to be a cheap one with a small engine. I paid over a grand for a knackered 1.1l peugeot in my first year. 2L of gti - well you better have deep pockets!

Even a Golf with a smaller engine would be stupidly expensive on insurance.
Sorry to say it but OP's a bit of an idiot.

Not really? I had a 1.4 mk3 Golf and it was super cheap to insure. It was one of the slowest cars I've ever owned with a whopping 60bhp, but it was slow for sure.

They're also cheap to maintain too. A new LCA with the bushings already pressed in is like £30 from ECP. There's still a few floating around scrap yards too for even cheaper parts. I liked it so much I ended up with another mk3 a couple of years later, although that one was a 1.9TDI estate. They come in many flavours from the 1.4, through the 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, GTI, TD, TDI, and TDI110. They're all over the place too, you can pick up a half decent one for a couple of hundred quid.

All in, mk3s are great for younger drivers

GTIs will never be good for insurance, however. I really wanna sit my girlfriend in a mk2GTI, but she'll probably end up with a mk2 Driver or Polo Breadvan until she gets some decent NCB.

You can't just show prices without any extra info. How old did you put the driver as, and how much NCB? Which model mk3 Golf did you use? Those aren't bad for a GTI depending on driver age! Especially for main stream insurers. You could probably get it down quite a bit lower than that with specialist insurers.

They're a car that is commonly owned by young, male drivers who have only recently passed their test. They are also a car that is frequently crashed by young, male drivers who have only recently passed your test.

You would be a young male driver who had only recently passed your test.

You fall exactly into the demographic that is frequently responsible for accidents involving that model of car, therefore you are viewed as a very high risk driver for that vehicle.

Driver Age: 19 (My Age - would be more expensive for a 18 y/o)
0 NCB (new driver - as OP would be.)
"VOLKSWAGEN GOLF L, 1993-1997, 1391cc, 3 door hatchback, Manual, Petrol" - Not a GTI.
