As far as I am aware, it is illegal to drive a car in the UK if the car is not insured in the name of the person driving the car. Even if a person insured for said car is in it at the time and is consenting for you to be driving it, you are still not following the law.

You need to be insured on the car to be driving it, if caught 'You can get an unlimited fine, eight penalty points and a driving ban for driving without insurance, even if you're only a learner.'

why is insurance so expensive in the UK?

Your insurance provider determines the level of risk you pose by considering certain factors, like your age, job title, postcode, and the car you drive. But other factors have an effect on your premiums too; things like fraudulent claims and uninsured drivers hike up the cost of everyone's insurance.

As much as the first years driving and insurance price is notoriously sky high it drops quickly after a year or two, I'm on about £4-500 now for a sports/fast car, I'd prob pay half that for for a regular car.

Did you get caught/stopped?
If not then you may have got away with it. Otherwise you will get points on your licence and a fine.

What country issued your friend's driving licence? Only licences from certain countries qualify your friend to supervise you.

Your 'supervisor' needs to hold a valid driving licence (& not be banned from driving) to supervise you for the class of vehicle you are in (manual if it is a manual car) a licence issued by the UK or EU, Switzerland, Norway or Liechtenstein and have held it for 3 years and be over 21 years of age.

If you are driving you need to be covered by a policy of insurance as a named driver (you can have independent insurance by a specialist learner driver insurer that covers you separately) but there must be a policy of insurance on the car by the owner of the car

Your supervisor has to 'actively' supervise you not just sit next to you. Your supervisor if you were stopped would likely get done for aid and abet no insurance, aid and abet failing to supervise a learner driver and also get points. If they said they were not supervising you only you would get done as the driver for no insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence (unsupervised) maybe no L plates? If the police followed it up the owner of the car the owner could get done for permit no insurance (unless the owner of the car says you took their car without permission then you get done for taking a vehicle without the owners consent)

So if it hasn't happened drive legally from now on. If you were stopped and reported you could have some grief coming your way

People driving without insurance is one of the reasons why it's so expensive.
Cost of car parts and labour costs to fix the car etc is another reason why

Quick question, how old are you pal (and do you have any NCBs)? I remember you saying in another thread that you have a NA V8 S5, right? £500 sounds like an absolute dream on that kinda machine.

Yeah I'm a good bit older and have a few years NCB, really just making the point that your insurance doesn't stay that way forever and gets a lot more reasonable.

(My 1st year insurance in the Audi was £1600ish about 18 months ago, it came down fast )
