Nah. Anything goes, just some high school diploma from whatever country you're from. Your friend made the right decision: it's a lot easier to get into a good Chinese university if you're a foreign citizen than if you're Chinese: actually, there has been some controversy about Chinese people moving abroad and obtaining foreign citizenship for the sole reason of getting into a Chinese university (sounds weird, I know).

If you're a foreign national, you just need to submit some copy of your high school diploma and the results from the national Chinese proficiency test HSK (汉语水平考&#35797:wink:: it will be extremely easy to get sufficient scores on this test if you speak and read Chinese decently. The top universities, however, (talking Beida, Qinghua & Fudan) have their own entrance examinations I think, which foreign nationals must take as well.
