Okay. Where do I even begin?
I feel like I should preface this by saying that I've been looking forward to going to university since I was probably a toddler. The idea of walking around a campus with a backpack slung over my shoulder, bumping into new friends left, right and centre amazed me. I liked, but didn't love high school, and hated my college with a passion I have usually only reserved for mushrooms and maths. Needless to say, uni has some pretty high expectations.
However, when I didn't get into my university of choice (by a shocking amount - let's just say, "predicted As, achieved Cs" sums it up) after months of hating the place I strived to leave, I was a tad disappointed. But I picked myself off and wrote 'Leeds' instead of 'Lancaster' on any forms and now I'm currently sat in my dorm almost a week after officially moving out... Crazy, right?
So, my bucket (or Beckett List, I suppose you could say) has significantly changed - and is changing every day, now that these dreams have finally become reality. Without further ado, here it is:
1) Make it through the year. Simple enough, right?
2) Read more than you've ever read. As an English student, this should be a no-brainer.
3) Make some amazing new friends! If not now, when?
4) Try some amazing new food. Supposedly Leeds is meant to host so many different flavours under one roof, and I'm up for trying them all!
5) Become independent. It's strange knowing you really do have to make your own meals, because your mum isn't going to come and force you to.
6) Be happier. Bit sappy, but I want to make up for how bad college was (lmao).
7) Take advantage of all the freebies! In the past week alone I have eaten my body weight in free Domino's slices, and my draw is full to the brim of 2 for 1 vouchers and keyring bottle openers, and I'm quite proud of it to be honest.
8) Budget! I'm used to this already, just on a smaller level, and knowing there's no mum and dad to borrow a tenner off is a bit worrying - but knowing Aldi's 20p soup is pretty nice is a reassuring thought.
9) Take advantage of the nightlife - but don't feel pressured to go out and get drunk every night! Know your limits and stick to them, you want to have fun, not headaches the next day!
10) And finally, be confident and be myself - this can be hard with anxiety but so far, so good. I can only hope the rest of the term will be the same!
Thank you for reading! It's a bit long, but hopefully the people behind the free pizza like that sort of thing, haha. Back to reading Shakespeare again (#2: check!), thank you for the distraction!
