What is it like living in halls?

What is it like living in university halls? Do all uni's halls have the same experiences or does it vary a lot depending on which uni you go to?
What were some of your experiences?

It’s a little bit pot luck who you end up with, so it depends if you’re a party animal and great at socialising (in which case go for halls) as you’ll meet lots of new people. However if you’re not so great at socialising then you might end up with a load of rowdy and inconsiderate neighbours, so probably don’t bother.

I was quite lucky that I got on well with all my flat mates, although after the first few days we never really spoke again, but it was mutual as we had all met people we got in better with on our course or in societies. Some flats, like my boyfriends, are still in contact having graduated and did everything together, no matter the course. Sometimes though there might be just one student who doesn’t get on with all the others and feels uncomfortable. It’s tally because they’re quite introverted and don’t want to do the same as the rest of the group. You can request to switch flats, but im not sure how fast anything is done about it!

You also need to be able to put up with different peoples ways of living. Nobody will organise things the same as you do at home, and some people may expect everything to still be done for them (e.g. washing up, emptying the bin, even moving their bowl to the side of the sink...).

Sorry if I’ve just confused you more!

Hi @Reekay,

Living in halls is a lot of fun!

Especially in freshers week you can meet so many different people and always have someone to go on a night out with or explore the city. It can be a little noisy at the weekends but this largely depends on time of year (freshers and holidays like halloween), where your halls is located and how big they are.

People tend to have different experiences in student halls as they all have different facilities and different people in them so I don't think having a great experience in halls is dependent on what university you go to. I personally had a fantastic experience in halls and thats where I met most of my friends! I lived in a flat with 3 other girls and 1 boy and we all got on really well and were in the same friendship group. We all had our own bathrooms and shared a kitchen. At times the kitchen did get really messy but that can easily be kept on top of if you clean up after yourself!

The halls I lived in was owned by Unite Students and they had a laundry room, common room, study room and gym in the halls I lived in. It also had security staff so there wasn't any issues with safety.

Do you have any other questions?

it's exactly as rowdy as you'd expect on a Friday night, but for the most part it is surprisingly quiet. people do actually spend most of their time either asleep, outside, or studying in their rooms so you can hear a pin drop 90% of the time

In that case, I hope that people I do end up living with are similar people to me. Thanks.

Yeah because there are often lots of students living there you'll definitely find people suited to you so you shouldn't have anything to worry about!
