What did you write for the new source of evidence for scientists in the re-classification? Biochemical analysis of DNA base sequence? Cytochromes? Fossil records or anatomical? And the difference between the two figures of classification? Difference in family.

Lol, thinking about it, let's not linger on this ridiculous exam anymore!

yea that was dna/fossil records etc. btw where are you getting the answers to these exams we have just sat?

oh and ur an academic genius pal 300/300 in biology AS:biggrin:  , and 295 in chem  , i doubt ul have to go in for A2's to maintain the A's!! must have worked urself to the bare bones?

lol the exam was so lol... erm! half of the people in my school left the paper and just walked out of the exam hall! most of the girls were playing with their hair!

anyways gotta to put up hopes up for the synoptic :s-smilie: anyone got any ideas about what the essay could be on! wot eva happens i think we gotta revise everything anyways but any ideas on what MUST be remembered!

my teacher reckons it could be genetic related question or phospholipid bilayer! perhaps! also i ve kinda noticed there always appears to be sumthin to do nitrogen nd carbon cycles, respiration and photosynthesis!.... sumwhere u have to ryt them!

but any other ideas?

Lol, firstly thanks for the compliments...I'm not one of those who work day in day night, staring at the textbook 24/7...not as hard as you might think. My secret is the speed i write in exams, maintain legibility! I underline every keyword in a question, write excessively and still get time at end to check my work and write more! For example, a 1 mark question, i would write loads to secure my mark (given that i don't contradict myself)...i just write tonnes! ...I have tough skin as well so no blisters or aching...probably cos i practice on violin and piano everyday and work in takeway dealing with hot food- tough skin= success!
The questions are generally quite vague... and seeing as this is one of th last years + the fact that the media is portraying exams as easier I think they are going to start clamping down on questions and making them alot harder.. although the synoptic ones are always kinda vague....imho...
I havent seen anything about cell membranes ever... could be one that might come up? Covers all angles

I.e unit 1 - how the cell membranes work what theyre consisted of
Unit 2 - DNA going throgh cell membranes
Unit 3 - How cell membranes help us
Unit 4 - Theyre specific job for different organes + How we came to get them (evolution) + Christae - differences in kingodoms i.e chitin walls etc. Cullose in plants
Unit 5 - Something to do with fertilisers being absorbed

COuld be a goer??? Includes most modules?
Reply 44
No I don't think that opens enough doors, quite specific. I think it will be something to do with global warming.
Reply 45
I hope it's not about cell membranes lol.

An essay on Intracellular Organelles, ATP or Structure of cells related to function would be good.
theyve already done cells to function a while back so they wont do that....

ATP is good if a bit too specific... maybe something about energy cycles??? ATP,NADPH NAD, Photo synthesis - respiration??

and they already did a global warming esque one... about rising temperatures.

I feel a hard obscure question coming up... ala microscope question '05.... piss...

People are speculating that it may be ions in biology? i think energy cycles and ATP stand a good chance of cropping up but i definetely think that they will through a odd one in with it

ions! I hope not lol.

Okies, just as some sort of guideline/summary here's a list of all the previous essay titles that have been set and some 'maybes' for this year;

June 2002

· Describe the different ways in which organisms use ATP

· Describe how the structure of cells is related to their function

January 2003

· Discuss the biological importance of water

· Discuss the movement of substances within living organisms.

June 2003

· The structure and functions of carbohydrates.

· Cycles in biology

January 2004

· Discuss the causes of variation and its biological importance.

· How is the structure of proteins related to their functions.

June 2004

· The process of osmosis and its importance to living organisms.

· Discuss energy transfers which take place inside living organisms.

January 2005

· Discuss how microscopes have contributed to our understanding of living organisms.

· Enzymes and their importance in plants and animals.

June 2005

· Discuss negative feedback in living organisms.

· Mean temperatures are rising in many parts of the world. The rising temperatures may result in physiological and ecological effects on living organisms. Describe and explain their effects.

Possible questions in order of likelihood (a personal choice and info from teachers, other people on TSR and whatnot)

· Discuss the importance to living organisms of the shape of biological molecules.

· Discuss the role of proteins in living organisms.

· Discuss the importance of specialised exchange surfaces.

· Discuss the importance of diffusion in the lives of living organisms.

· Discuss the importance of transport systems in plants and animals.

· Discuss the importance of temperature in the lives of plants and animals.

· Discuss the importance of biological pathways in the lives of animals and plants.

· Discuss why the process of cell differentiation is so important to living organisms.

· Discuss the importance of exchanges between living organisms and their environment.

· Discuss the importance of membrane structure in the lives of living organisms.

· Discuss the importance of the genetic code in the survival of living organisms.

· Discuss the importance to living organisms of responding to changing environmental conditions.

Isn't biology fun!

Whoops forgot to include 2006 - 2007, hang on a sec - coming up!
Reply 51
2007:

Movements inside cells.

Transfers through ecosystems.

2006:

The transfer of substances containing carbon between organisms
and between organisms and the environment

Cells are easy to distinguish by their shape.
How are the shapes of cells related to their function?

There's been quite a lot on ecosystems/energy transfer and not that much genetics stuff - I reckon one will be genetic and the other one about cells that looks easy but is actually quite tricky.

Hi emma need your help! have you got kind of a plan/outline for this essay it would be a real help because genetics isn't my strong point! 'Discuss the importance of the genetic code in the survival of living organisms'.
thanks

Discuss the importance of genetic code in survival of living organism

P1: Structure of DNA and coding for proteins
- Specific base sequence allowing transcription for cell growth
-Proteins, e.g. enzymes in metabolic pathways + 1 example (respiration)
P2: Importance of meiosis in transferring genetic code
- Maintains constant diploid number= so fertile offspring
- Process of meiosis
P3:Variation in genetic code for survival
- Processes of mutation to give rise to multiple alleles
- Natural selection for survival of fittest
P4: Genetic coding in relation to mapping of brain/ nerves
- reflex escape response
- Genetic coding for myenlinated axon for quick response

What JOYEESANG said ^^^

Although as well in addition try and relate one/a few of those points to plants, whenever it says 'living organisms' it means 'there are points to be made about plants', so you could maybe use mutation in plants and expand it to it's effect on food webs?

In the opening paragraph you could also go into how DNA is adapted, e.g. it's very stable, compact, allows for specific replications and whatnot and relate that to how terribly important it is.

Oh and also importance of asexual reproduction/mitosis, and some plants use this in harsh condtions when there maybe isn't pollen or whatever, so that ensure's survival.

You get up to 16 marks for scientific content, so you need 8 good, strong points in your plan (which is sometimes really difficult without notes!) and go from there.

thanks that was very useful!
has any1 else done a bullet pointed list like this for any of the other questions!

any ideas:
Discuss the importance of biological pathways in the lives of animals and plants.
P1.
Krebs cycle - continous production of NADH + ATP - Allows production of ATP at ETC
Calvin cycle - RuBP + Rubisco + NADPH differences in how energy is made, photolyosis and glycolis
- energy nessecary for living organisms
p2.
primary and secondry immune response
macrophage antigen presentation - B lymph. secrete antibody clone- Help. T cells(receptors) clone - fast immune response second time round. Long lasting immunity
p.3 Apoplast - Symplast pathway maintance of water uptake at casparian strip- soluable minerals limited by symplast
Xerophytes - Adaptation (curled leaf etc.) limited apoplast pathyway important otherwise loss of turgor etc.
p.4 Gas diffusion - Oxygen + CO2 Short pathway in Lungs alveoli efficent gas exchange
Cappiliaries - single cell thick gas exchange
Disease - ephyzema increases pathway - less efficant oxygen diffusion
Reply 57
thank u

wot do u mean by..... Disease - ephyzema increases pathway - less efficant oxygen diffusion?
Reply 58
Doesn't emphysema reduce folds/elasticity in alveoli so would decrease surface area?
I think that might be what they meant.

Also food chains and webs are biological pathways, so you could maybe talk about them and importance in survival/energy loss through trophic levels?

I wish we could all do a plan like this on Weds but we're on our own :frown:

i know i am really not looking forward to this! in our school we done hardly any pract :s-smilie: in fact none really! i really dont want to fail this exam!

i now this web was posted on this forum somewhere b4 but its really help i reckon:
