urgh, hope that's not as bad as it looks, because it looks awful...

In other news... I've booked a riding holiday in the Pyrenees  within touching distance (about 40km) of the Col d'Aspin, Col de Mente, Port de Bales, Peyresourde, Portet d'Aspet, Superbagneres, Portillon... and slightly further touching distance (up to 90km ish) of the Tourmalet, Aubsique and the Hautacam.

What was i thinking?!

Holy ****!
What happened?

Just as I stood up to get a bit more power, my chain decided to jump down a chainring on the front, so my right foot shot forward and unclipped itself from the pedal. The bike went away from under me, to my left (I think the front wheel left the ground, so I had no grip) with my left foot still clipped in, so it threw me over onto the right hand side of my body and I landed head and right elbow first on the road. The head injury is where all the blood came from.

Thankfully, I was still in sight of my house, so I called an ambulance from my mobile, walked my bike home and waited for them to arrive. Got it all looked at, and it's nothing long term, just some (rather large) grazes and mild shock.

Most importantly, the bike is still fine... just needs some thorough cleaning

The Pyrenees are awesome! I have a load of photos from a recent trip there in my deviant art page (sig) and I cycled the foothills of them last year. One of the most amazingly beautiful places I've ever been too. They're quite steep though :s-smilie:
Woa, how did that happen.

Nice bike btw, is it weird that I noticed the bike before the blood? ! :p:

lol I checked my forks were okay before I checked if my skull was okay. Thankfully both are fine...

Ouch, i did something similar a while ago but somehow didn't go down - i just ended up groining myself on the crossbar and melting the soles of my shoes on the road as i skated to a stop :o:

I remember a certain Texan multiple tour winner doing something similar on luz ardiden so you're in good company..

Wicked pics! looks amazing/steep  If only i'd not had all that time off riding to write my dissertation...
Still got two weeks to ride myself into form though

I think its time we had some proper bike appreciation...

post your ride time!

The one on the left is my 4X bike, the one on my right is my general trail/downhill/freeride bike!

Hey guys, I'm looking for a bit of advice. I want to start road cycling but I won't be able to buy a bike until about Christmas time. So my plan is to get my fitness up at the gym, especially on the bikes, and hopefully it will stand me in good stead for when I finally get a road bike. Is this a reasonable compromise? Also, what's a reasonable 10k time for the gym?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Train for a 10mile time, anything under 30mins is good. The Time Trial events in cycling on the road are 10,25 and 50miles(well at least the ones i know of).
The gym bike won't help you too much, as soon as you hit a small hill you'll struggle at first.

You could change the level/resistance of the bike to simulate a hill.
okfaye!

obviously though gym bikes can never simulate proper riding conditions.

However the advantage is that you can concentrate on one specific thing for an extended period, like high cadence work to build up muscle mass.

It's not the same. As you don't grind up the hill in a high gear, you go into a lower easier gear (which isn't like a low resistance on the gym bike).
I like all the bicycle porn in this society. I have some knackered Green piece of rubbish that's gonna get me to and from Uni next year I hope. I'm already quite fit and do enjoy cycling more than running now since my knees have taken a bit of a bash. It's great.
In other news, Lance is apparently coming out of retirement to ride the Tour de France again. Rumours are he's going to be riding for Astana, although this is not sure.

I wonder how he'll do, a year out won't have helped him although appartently he is still superfit.

George AJCSJWHSJKJHSJHSKDHJK, do you have a bike? Even if it's not a road bike, get out and ride it. I used to do 60 miles or so at a time, with a rucsac, on an old bike with only 4 gears, no front derailler, hills were hell but it got me fit pretty quick.

Maybe someone can help me. Every time i'm out cycling with my club after about 30ish miles I always get mild cramp in my left leg. It is at the top of the leg/buttock. I'm not sure if it's a fitness thing or a position thing. My right leg feels fresh still, and i don't feel fatigued, it's just once this kicks in my performance greatly suffers after about 10 more miles as it gets worse and worse.

I did 100miles a week on Sunday ago and didn't get cramp. I was cycling at around 17mph. When i'm with my club we cycle at around 22mph which feels like i'm constantly running at 90%. It's only at these speeds that i get the problem. Anything i can do to specifically work on this problem?

Thanks

It sounds like a position problem. I get cramp in my left calf muscle if my seat is the wrong hight.

I read somewhere that cramp in a specific muscle is most likely to be caused by fatigue rather than dehydration/loss of electrolytes, which causes more general cramping. If the club ride is a substantial step up from your usual pace/intensity then that would fit. But i'm no expert...

Did anyone see the Angliru stage of the Vuelta on Saturday?! What a climb - multiple sustained sections over 20% and touching 23% at times. Madness.
check it out..

It was a hell of a race, and a hell of a finish. The winner was ruthless, everyone was dropping like flies behind him.
Sundays race was awesome too, they had just climbed a big hill and then the leader sprints off no one even attempted to chase that how awesome a move it was.

Do you think that I might be better cycling in a higher gear so i'm spinning less (when i'm out it looks like i'm spinning more than everyone else)?

I had a excellent club run today. I didn't get dropped or even close. It was me who was doing the dropping on the hills (normally my weak link). At each junction we stop so everyone can catch up, they're usually waiting for me.

What does everyone think of energy drinks? It seems like every time i cycle and take an energy drink my performance increases because i don't get the cramp problem. I'm still not 100% convinced.

I just take water and a banana normally. I've tried various energy bars in the past but didn't think much of them.
