Air Ops (control) Sergeant - Help

So I've passed OASC but haven't been offered the roles I initially wanted, however I have been provided the opportunity for the role of Air Ops (control) Sergeant. After looking into the role I have become set and determined to pass the phone call interview, but prior to this I would appreciate some assistance with confirming the layout of the training pipeline.

There are 3 training specialisations which are;
1) Terminal Air Traffic Controller
2) Area Radar
3) Weapons Control

Now I believe all NCC's are required to complete the CAOM course, but is this the same with JATCC, or is JATCC only for Terminal Air Traffic Controller?

So for example for a Weapons controller is the training pipeline as follows: BRTC, NCACITC, CAOM, JATCC then the weapons control training OR BRTC, NCACITC, CAOM then the weapons control training.

Any help with this is would be a massive help.

Good evening,

I think it would be BRTC, NCCAITC, CAOM then streamed JATCC (ATC) or WC (ABM).

However I’m not 100% sure the current training pipeline whilst the RAF still tries to amalgamate the NCC trade. (Historically they were recruited separately).

Can I ask what role you initially wanted and why you weren’t selected for it?

Good evening,

What you have put seems the logical way about it. But yeah I have heard so many different things so far and just need it all clarified, but I'll hopefully be making a visit to RAF Shawbury sometime next week to clear everything up.

I was going for RPAS as my main role, but during OASC I personally screwed up the planning exercise and I let it get to me. If I kept my head held high and not let it show, I'm sure it would have been a different story. And adding to that my interview wasn't as strong as it should've been.

If you really want to be an RPAS pilot with your experience and hindsight from the day, I would recommend developing yourself for a year and reapplying rather than going for a non commissioned controlling role.

Evidently the choice is yours and it depends what you are currently doing in life etc.

Is the difference between commissioned and non commissioned really that vast? Ultimately I will always want to be RPAS, but I was willing to go down this route and get an abundance of RAF experience and character development under my belt before trying again.

Depends in respect to what.

Pay? Conditions? Rewards?
No, pretty much the same, bar a couple of minor exceptions.

Role, expectations, responsibilities, prospects (in service, at least)?
Very different.

Well the pay, conditions and reward is what I am set on for the time being. The extra responsibilities and progression can wait at the next stop when that time comes.

I'm looking forward (hopefully) to the challenge that the NCACITC brings, so can't be so easily swayed from that one

The point is they won't come (in the same way) if you pick one path over the other. So are you looking for immediate gratification, or being set up for success later?

(NB, there's no wrong answer, this is just about getting it right in your head)

Correct me if I'm mistake, but isn't there the chance to take the non commissioned role then 5 years or so from now try again for RPAS?

Yes, but there's no more guarantee of getting in then than there is now.

Yeah no of course but there isn't any guarantee of me getting it in a years time either, so my reasoning would be to take this opportunity that has presented itself with welcoming arms.

I fully appreciate what you are saying and these sort of questions need to be put on people, but for me, this is a massive opportunity and upgrade from my current situation.

Maybe visiting RAF Shawbury will help give me the answer I'm looking for.

All good, I'm just thinking about it from the interviewers point of view, and probing you with the questions you might get. If you've got the answers, great.

Current breakdown for weapons control is as follows:

BRTC - 10 weeks
NCACITC - 11 weeks
CAOM - 2 weeks
WCC - 28+ weeks (12 weeks at Shawbury sim based, minimum 16 weeks at Boulmer live)

There will most likely be holds between BRTC & NCACITC, then potentially another hold before CAOM and possibly a hold after.

PM me if you want with any questions you may have
