University of Reading Accommodation

Hi There, I’ve narrowed my accommodation choices down to 3, St Pats, Wessex and St George’s. I would be grateful if anyone could give me some extra knowledge on any of these choices and pros/cons of them. Is there a standout choice out of them? I would prefer to stay in a more social environment where there’s always stuff to go and go out. Is it also true that St Pats is the most sociable? Thanks!
Hey, haven’t even accepted never mind thought about accommodation yet! what course you applied to?

Hi!
I'm a first year student and this year I lived in Wessex! I haven't heard to much, nor did I hear before I moved in that St Pats was the most social hall. I have a few friends that lived in St Pats this year and they had a lot of issues with things being broken, and showers getting flooded and the maintenance team not fixing it in any hurry at all. The maintenance office is actually located at Wessex, so things do generally get done quite quickly here.
Also because Wessex is one building, although you might have some kitchens or floors that are less social that others, its not really the case that if you end up in a non social kitchen you'll be at a disadvantage. My kitchen was actually on the ground floor, which most people don''t know exists! There were only 5 of us in my kitchen because of it, but we made friends with a kitchen upstairs in freshers week and we had soooo many good times! Wessex can be a bit loud sometimes especially on Union nights (Wednesday&Saturday) as they are the staple nights out. But the general thought is that if you are going to go out and be loud at pres one night, don't complain when someone else does it another night, unless your ill or something and its realllyyyy disturbing you!
Wessex JCR is amazing this year, and I believe next years will be just as amazing as my year in halls was full of amazing people, so choosing a JCR I think will be quite hard! We had a party on the first night which was awkward but fun! (As we moved in on a Friday Freshers hadn't started yet!). It was a great chance to meet people, then on the Saturday the JCR took us on a bar crawl around the bars on campus and then on to some in town, that was also a really great opportunity to meet people before freshers week starts. I personally used it as an opportunity to get to know people who weren't from my flat (or that flat where most of my friends that I now have where from). Also the JCR always had people around of freshers week who would come to your pres, and then also take you to the events in town during freshers, which was great and we got taught all the Wessex chants, it was so much fun!
Also I would really recommend Wessex because we have a football team for both the boys and the girls, they always recommended that you get involved even if your not into football. I know the boys do actually play football matches, but I am sure that they also have people who aren't really amazing at football. But for the girls, ours is pretty much just for social, and we have had some great times!
Sorry for the really long post! But you're not going to ever get a very impartial opinion on halls because if you live in a good hall with a good social atmosphere then you will generally love your hall and defend it and reccomend it!
Sorry for the massively long post! Just wanted to give you as much info as possible! If you do have any information about Wessex, the university or anything! Then I am willing to answer any of your questions! Just get in contact x

Hi! I'm applying for first year accommodation right now and I'm considering Bridges (shared bathroom), Wessex or Bridges townhouse.
I'm fine with sharing a bathroom but I was wondering what was that like at Wessex as I know its 5 to a bathroom (rather than 3 to a bathroom in bridges)? - the virtual tour kind of makes the wessex bathrooms seem a big gross.
I don't know if you have any info to base this on but would you recommend bridges or wessex for first year?
Also some people have said that townhouses can be a bit quiet?
Many thanks! x

Hi @Emmadeegan

That's exciting - have you made a choice yet?
If not, either is great! In terms of location, they both have similar benefits as they're very near to each other and can also share some facilities. Bridges is more modern and you will be separated into flats of 10, whereas Wessex has more of a hotel feel in terms of it's layout being corridor style. I was in Bridges last year and I loved it there - it's got a very light kitchen and open space, and the bathrooms are very modern. I do have friends that also stayed in Wessex though who also loved that - but it is an older building so facilities like the toilets are more communal than in Bridges. Wessex can be louder so it also depends what lifestyle you're looking for as both have their benefits!
Bridges Townhouses are of 12 people to a house with 2 to a bathroom and can vary in terms of activity depending on who's in your building, but as a general, townhouses and standard Bridges often mix for socialising so it doesn't have to be quiet if you don't want it to be.

Wessex is first years only I believe, but Bridges is a mix of first years and returners (although you will be put with other freshers if it's your first year). Price may also be a factor to consider.
It totally depends on what you're looking for as to which is better suited for you, but both are great for first year students.

Hope this helps but do let me know if you have any further questions and good luck choosing/applying!
