Potentially Returning Mature Student and Finance

Hopefully this is the right place to put this but guess could also be the finance forums but anyways

Hey

I'm 24 and thinking of returning to education following almost a year of hating where I've ended up in my job and thinking about what I'd really like to do which is making me consider studying Zoology and Entomology at Harper Adams.

My fascination has always been with insects since I Studied level 3 animal management in 2013-15. I have triple distinction star in that, which should help me get in.

After doing animal care I went to the RVC to study veterinary nursing but quit several months in after hating it and a bit of a mental health meltdown.

So after a few years of work and two meltdowns later (such fun) I think the time has come to find something I'm passionate about and getting back into animals and lab based entomology would be perfect for me.

I guess my concerns are that I had some student finance before. Also I currently can't stand the thought of living in student accommodation so would want to rent somewhere nearby. (I am currently renting off my salary)

So... I dunno how to phrase it but... How can I finance this, if it's what I decide to do with my life?? Will the fact that I'm 24 and have already quit uni count against me? Also does it check against my own income as opposed to my parents as I am now independent??

Basically I'm confused and don't want worries about finance and accommodation to get in the way of finally getting out of a job which has ground me down for months and having a shot at being happy again...

Thanks
(Sorry for the rambling)

Just to check:

- you only went to university for a few months so only used one year student finance?
- what age will you be on the September of starting the course?

Aha thanks for the reply,

I started in September 2015 and I think quit around February 2016 so not a full year cause I think the tuitions fees were paid in a few installments? I also had maintenance

Sorry if that's still too vague

And ideally I would be 25 starting the course

Well - you can still receive funding for a new course if you did less than a year previously. If you are 25 or older at the date they use then you won't need to give your parents salary details.

Have you checked the accommodation costs at Harper Adams? Perhaps also look at Keele as they have good feedback and some reasonable living costs.

Ah it's good that the past won't hinder for future applications too badly then, and hopefully it would cover enough for accommodation

Yeah the accommodation costs are fairly decent there but then also probably about the same as I'm paying now days for rent and bills and food so seems like it's be easier to cope living alone.

Will have a look but fairly sure HA is the only place that lets you specialise in entomology

Thanks for your responses

Hopefully others who have studied similar degrees will be able to advise. I think there is a least one on the mature students forum who did a somewhat similar course.

Have you checked to see what proportion of the course covers entomology? It may be that some other zoo/ bio courses allow a decent amount of time to study this but without the name. You might also look for undergrad masters courses (a year longer) to see if that interests as it allows time for longer research projects and more time being a student.
