The university experience

Did it live up to your expectations?

Yes it kind of did from an academic perspective but from a social perspective I made some errors and that's because I didn't make the most of the experience and I didn't live in the moment. It's depends on the individual really

To get the most out of it I would highly recommend:
Registering for more than 1 society
Attending all the meaningless career fairs
Going to the library often (not for socialising just enjoying the moment and studying using the resources)
Not overly focussed on the grades and working
Socialise with the Uni friends in Uni and outside of Uni..
Stay on campus if there is a requirement due to costs so you're not constantly worrying about the last train or train times..
Do a placement year if there is an option on you're course..
Stay in touch with Univeristy friends, they are likely to be in the same job boat as you

Hi @NACHO44

Great question!

I think university life is what you want to make it, especially in first year. I would say join at least 1 sports team or society because that can really help with getting to know people and making friends. I was a member of my university's Musical Theatre Society and it was a really big part of my experience.

Before I started uni I assumed that all students had to love going on nights out. However, I very quickly realized that it wasn't my thing - and that was okay! I just did other things I enjoyed instead like going to concerts or going for coffee with a friend.

My biggest piece of advice would be to take everything in your stride and say yes to every new experience that is offered to you.

If you have any questions about university life or my experience, let me know!

I believe that university life is just what you would like it to be, particularly in first year. I would recommend joining at least one sports team or community because it can be very beneficial in terms of meeting fresh individuals new friends. I was a participant of my university's Performing Arts Society, and it was a huge part of my expertise.

I would say absolutely! But i've always been told you get out of university what you put into it, so this will all depend on how you used your time because its not all about the course! Getting a good degree classification is very important don't get me wrong, but so are the life lessons and the friends you meet and the experiences you have whilst you're there. It's always good to try new things and university is a great time to do this because you don't have any full-time work commitments.

If you use your time at uni wisely, you'll come out of it a more experienced, well rounded person who is better prepared for life moving forwards

Echoing what others are saying, uni experience is what you make it and what you put in you get out. Either you learn the hard way by struggling or by mistakes or you take every opportunity that comes your way and learn that way. It also depends on your outlook and what you're looking to get out of uni. It's not as hyped up as everyone makes it out to be - I learned that first hand. Although I enjoyed freshers, events, and socialising with so many people, I enjoyed myself but I wouldn't say it was the highlight of my uni experience. It's easy to get sucked into the hype around uni, but it's not for everyone.

Most of all, take things as they come. Open your eyes to whatever comes to your way and experience what there is to offer. Going away to uni is a chance to learn how to adult so make the most of it, make the mistakes and learn from them, have fun with people, work hard and find what works for you. Don't go in with high expectations and then feel disappointed because it wasn't what you're looking for. When you realise what you like, dislike, what works for you, how to do things, etc. - that's when you start to enjoy your uni experience.

I treated university the same as I treated school and sixth form, therefore this seemingly spectacular university life did/does not exist for me :dontknow:
