UoN engineering and physical science foundation FEPS

Looking to connect with other students that will be joining Nottingham on the engineering and physical science foundation (FEPS) this September 2022.

Reach out, say hello!
Hi,

I'm also joining this course in September, what course are you hoping to move onto after the first year?

Brilliant! I'll be moving onto civils afterwards, what about you?

Have you managed to find anyone else doing the course?

Hey,
I'm gonna be turning up to the foundation too. You guys staying in raleigh park for accom?

Hi!
What are you thinking of progressing onto?

And I'm going to be in halls on Uni Park.

Hopefully comp sci with year abroad, gonna have to spend this summer studying maths so I don't fail the foundation lol. I dropped maths at AS bc I couldn't hack it so I'm kind of stressing hahaha

Awesome. I'm sure it will be fine. The whole point of the foundation year is for people who didn't cover the requisite subjects like Maths and they will be brilliant at helping.

Yeah, I spoke to one of the teachers and he said there's like a 90% pass rate which made me feel a bit better. Have you thought about what societies you want to join yet?

Yeah, they provide excellent support on the course and it has a very high pass rate with many Foundation year students going on to outperform direct entry students later down the line on their main course.

I'm actually already a student at UoN switching degrees onto the Foundation course so I more or less have everything like that sorted but always open to trying new ones. What about you?

Oh sick, I want to join band soc and rock or punk society (they seem to be pretty similar so I'm gonna choose based on who I think I'll get on with most). Honestly there's a lot of cool looking societies so I'll have to make a decision when I get there. Since you've already been on a course do people usually make friends through the classes or is it mostly just whoever you're in halls with? I'm switching from raleigh to broadgate bc I didn't realise that the foundation was on the UP campus hahaha

Nice! Yeah, the societies are amazing, try as many out as you can in first year.

My friends are split pretty evenly between halls and courses so I think it's pretty open. You'll make friends in halls based on seeing them outside working hours a lot (less so in self-catered) whereas you will see people from your course essentially daily.

The foundation year is taught on Jubilee Campus, who told you it is taught on UP? It is based in the Advanced Manufacturing Building.

OH hahahaha all over the website it says engineering is in UP and at the bottom of the foundation page it gives the UP address but I guess that must've just meant that the people to contact are there. I searched for ages but couldn't find an answer, this is my first time posting on here so I never thought to ask. I guess I should cancel that change real quick. How big do you think this class is going to be? The main courses are probably pretty packed but I imagine the foundation would be smaller right

The actual engineering faculty is on UP yeah but the foundation year is taught on Jubilee. It'll give the UP address as that's the main campus with all the admin on too.

The change in accommodation is up to you, the campuses are right next door to each other, you don't have to live on the one you study in if you don't mind the commute. I already lived on UP and know its the bigger campus with everything on so I would rather live there than Jubilee.

Class sizes will vary depending on the format of the class (lectures are for larger groups and then you will have workshops/labs and seminars in smaller groups) For class sizes, they can be very large. I think the total cohort for the course is around 300 which is similar to a normal degree year. There are core modules which everyone has to cover (such as maths) and will mainly be in semester 1. Then the course will become more specialised as people split away into their different paths e.g. architecture, aerospace, maths, physics etc. There the groups can be quite small.
