Grade 9 in English Literature

Hi, I’m doing Dr Jekyll and Hyde, Macbeth, Inspector calls, Poetry I’m stuck in 6s and 7, I really want to get a grade 9

I’ve checked out a website called Physics and Maths tutor, it has English notes, can someone please check that and tell me if it’s good enough for grade 8s and 9s

Also send me your tips and how you got a grade 8 or 9

Thanks

Hi I'm a year 12 and would certainly recommend PMT I would advise you to create character and theme mindmaps for everything then look on PMT for quotes, context ect you missed and add in a different colour. Keep creating them off by heart then do as many practise essays/ past papers as possible and TIME YOURSELF - give yourself approx one minute a mark then add anything else to the essay in a different colour or make a note of where you passed the time- it is important to be strict with yourself to get those grades. Then hand them to your teachers to mark - they will even help source questions for you. Good luck with your revision - which other subjects do you take as I may be able to help ?

seneca learning is also a godsend for revision of characters, context or anything, there are paying versions but most of it is free and there are even sample essay questions too !
Hope you found that helpful !

im in year 11 and getting 9s in practice papers and i think the main jump between 6s and 7s to 8s and 9s is vocabulary and punctuation and general essay crafting, there are some good quizlets on improving vocab and memorising words to show off and also look for synonyms of key words like depict and suggest, also working on how to use semi colons and colons with affect is quite a key thing too

this all just stuff my english teacher has been telling us for the last year so yhh i hope this helps (:

PMT is good. So is Mr Bruff on youtube. At the end of the day, regardless of how good your notes are, the thing that will get you to a 9 is the ability to write the essays effectively and hit all of the AOs
Mr Bruff and Mr Salles Teaches English on Youtube! Both amazing channels, the latter especially is just amazing! Doing past papers is also a given and getting them marked by your teacher would really help you see what areas specifically to improve on. Familiarise yourself with the structure of the questions asked for each text, and the AOs as well. Also watch walkthrough mocks!!

hi! i’m year 13 but got 9 in both english language and lit. my biggest piece of advice is to create a poster, mindmap (whatever you find most effective) of key concepts of the literature you do, e.g inspector calls having class, gender roles, etc. i then found very good quotes i could use either for multiple themes or that are very strong and added these on. i then transferred them to cue cards. i always found id get the most marks when i included lots of context and WHY the author wrote specific things, as well as lots of quotes

i wish you the best of luck!

sorry, could you clarify what you mean?
if i’m thinking what you mean: i used classic paper and different colour pens (these are also a very useful tip!) and then either went through the book and looked at my highlighted quotes or looked up online, unfortunately i can’t remember what websites i used as it was a long time ago but i remember quizlet being very good!

I looked at the glossary of revision guides to find grade 8/9 vocab and learnt where it could be applied then for each I went to youtube or even tiktok to find more in-depth context to understand WHY the writer focused on or wrote something

Oh it’s fine, I meant website etc, thanks a lot though
Also Quizlet was another resource to help boost my vocabulary - this can be applied to all essay subjects (I did history,French, sociology and psychology)
here I would type in Grade 9 vocab for Macbeth (as an example) and do the same for Eng lit and lang in general. Always use a variety of sophisticated language for example try to avoid repeating yourself often and use more advanced terms e.g conveys instead of shows
anytime! and I wish you the best of luck -- you'll do great!

For maths - Mathsgenie complete all tests and check answers and note down your scores then filter by grade depending on your personal targets, Youtube was really helpful in explaining answers to papers I had struggled with as it was like a lesson without interruption.
Seneca and quizlet were great for all of my subjects
History was one of my favourite subjects- I made timelines on my wall out of post-it notes . I used a different colour per topic i.e yellow for health
Mindmaps were also essential , Youtube is also great to gain additional information , and would give the same essay advice as for english regarding timing ect. seneca helped me loads in history as it is pretty content heavy for GCSE so I was able to revise different areas easily

Good luck- don't put too much pressure on yourself and balance your workload . I would advise little and often with revision as becoming burnt out is so easily done - just gradually increase nearer to exam season

Corbett maths was also great I just completed question papers in areas I struggled with. Even if I didn't get the answer accurately , understanding the clear method will gain you lots of extra marks !! My school used mathswatch for homework so I completed questions on there and looked at the leaderboards to make a competition with myself to consistently do the most .
No worries , I hope you do well

Hi, just did my GCSEs so hope this helps 💜. I got a 9 in Lit, and definitely agree that the difference that bumps you up from a 6-7 to a 9 is essay crafting and depth of analysis and overall understanding you have (aka your ability to think outside the box)!
Personally (bear with me haha, I know some of these may sound a little mathsy/calculated, you can tell I'm a sciences student haha), this is what helped:
First of all, resources - Stacey Reay (I sound like an ad for her haha, but seriously, she's pretty underrated) and Spark notes (may be more useful for your Shakespeare play as it was for Romeo and Juliet).
Essay Structure- Intro, 6 mini paragraphs (one quote per paragraph, 3 analysis points per quote and link to authors intention/historical context), something we used to call a premise (where you kind of introduce a second element into your essay e.g. focusing in Sheila before her transformation in the first half of the essay, and her more socialist beliefs after her transformation in the second half, normally after the third or fourth paragraph), then a conclusion.
Revision- watching Stacey Reay videos and please actually read the books, you'll be surprised how many don't. Make essay plans for each theme definitely (and I would suggest each character as well for ease, but I didn't actually do this because of time purposes), and then write the key points of your essay (I did 3, then two quotes to support each point) and your quotes in the back of a cue card and basically learn the essays so thatbwehn you read the question, you can adapt a prompt in a minute and get writing rather than making a drawn out plan. Get essays marked by your teacher to help your overall writing style, and as others have said, maybe try to upgrade your vocabulary?
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions xx
