Med School help

Hello everyone hope you're well, if I get 9s in the sciences, maths, and English language but fail English Literature (GCSE) or just about pass with a 4, will those grades be competitive enough to study medicine assuming I did pretty well in my A levels as well?
Any help is appreciated. Also, would you say I should resit literature, or if it doesn't matter?

Thanks

Hi.

https://www.medschools.ac.uk/studying-medicine/making-an-application/entry-requirements

This is for 2023-24. So things may change. Importantly though this doc doesnt say how they use the GCSEs in the selection process.

Some med schools count them (ie you need more than x at grade 7 for example), some give you points, so a 4 in English lit may disadvsntage you there depending on the number and grade of your other GCSEs.

However I have read a few admissions policied and dont ever remember seeing "you must have at least a grade x in eng LIT" eng LANG yes, not lit.

So hard to comment without knowing the gcse context. If its one of 8 thats different to if its one of 10/12.

@GANFYD ? Sorry for the tag :-)

Birmingham score both English literature and English language, but I cannot think of anywhere else that requires a specific English literature grade

thanks, when applying, do i need to give all my gcse grades? for lit and german it will 100% be under a grade 7 so dont want to put that in. As for the other 9 gcses il get, they should be above a grade 7 with maths, sciences and language being a 9. Would you also say i have a pretty good chance of getting into medicine and if A levels are more important?

You have to enter all your grades on UCAS, it is a requirement of completing an application. If you apply to medical schools where you meet the requirement, they will not look at your lower grades. Some medical schools score GCSEs, so this will depend on your other grades. A-levels are generally only used as a minimum requirement, so important, but not usually more important

Most med schools will accept GCSE resits, though not all.
Whether you resit depends on your other GCSEs and where you want to apply, so impossible to advise without results

il let you know of the results i think im going to get based on how i found the tests and past performances. English Lang: 9, English Lit: 4, Maths: 9, Chemistry: 9, Physics: 9, Biology: 9, RE: 7, German: 3, History: 8, PE: 7, Computer Science: 8

I believe il get above a grade 7 in everything (which is recommended) except for english lit and german. Not sure how this will affect me and if i should resit them both and aim for a a 7+ in both aswell if it matters?

Then you are short of enough 8/9s to go for the really GCSE heavy med schools (they would want 8 minimum), but would meet all the minimum requirement med schools, so it would come down to your UCAT. With those results, most places would not care about German and Eng Lit
